Thinking about applying for a service animal for an oc with some condition that prevents some things in their life? Well.. Top tips from a very HIGHLY informed person on service dogs.

First of all. ESA's (Emotional Support Animals) are NOT service animals. They do not help one with a disorder, condition, illness etc. They are to HELP sure? But they don't help one with full life. ESA's are NOT allowed in non-pet friendly places (Fancy restaurants, stores etc). No hate atall to this person as I have blurred their names and info out. Please do NOT attack this person if you find the application as this is just an example. If this is infact you, please inform me if you'd like me to take it down!


Second of all, please make sure the character's condition is actually avaliable for a service animal! Most conditions are avaliable for a service animal so do not worry! But dissociative disorders are NOT due to it not really affecting one's life hugely.

Third of all, dig deep into Japanese service dog laws! Do NOT just have a random mixed breed as a service animal, especially ones that are prone to severe health issues after awhile, like a pug, but most, if not all, dog breeds are allowed to be a service animal.

Fourth of all, make sure you read all information for JAPANESE laws!

• Any guide dog brought to Japan must be trained by a member of the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF). For the closest certified providers in your area, see IGDF’s map.
• Any mobility service dog or hearing service dog brought to Japan must be trained by a certified member of Assistance Dogs International (ADI).
• Unfortunately, Japan doesn’t officially recognize emotional support animals (ESAs) as widely as some western countries do. If you want to bring an ESA into Japan, you will have to confirm that your airline—and Japanese customs—will permit the type of animal you wish to bring. While certain legal organizations like ESAD International provide advice and documentation for those traveling with ESAs, there isn’t a guarantee that your airline will comply with your request. It may also be difficult to find housing that accommodates an ESA. If your service animal is a cat or a dog, importing them may be possible. If they are a more exotic animal, you may have to anticipate some pushback along the way.

Emotional support animals are almost like normal pets. They aren't like service animals and CANNOT be let inside of public spaces

small qution uh do you have to train the animal icly?

Not from what I've seen/done (3 dif ocs with service animals). As most first-timers (people with their first service dog) usually get put on a waiting list in a training place thingy (forgot what they're called ) for multiple years. And self trained may just be put into the application and don't need to be rped out with training.

Unsure if this is even possible due to the fact that applications need to be accepted to be a direct service animal. Could be able to check with staff!
