Please answer these questions from an In Character standpoint.

What is your name?
The video would start with a montage of Harry Akori in different suits presenting speeches and debates on stages, in classrooms, and even practice videos of him practicing in school gyms and his hometown bedroom. The video would then fade to Harry Akori standing at a podium, giving a big ol smile, “Hello! My name is Harry Akori, and I am looking to be your next Speech and Debate Club leader!” The video then panned to some more video montages of Harry doing more speeches and debates!

What is your age and grade?
Harry Akori came up on your screen after a few more montages. This time he was standing up in front of a whiteboard. Still in his suit, as if he was about to do a speech. Taking a small step forward, he would begin, “You may know my family quite a bit. My mom is a KPD officer, Yumi Akori, my uncle, Sako Akori is a professor, and the rest of my family is a bit chaotic.” Taking three steps to the left, the camera would follow, “Now, this video isn’t just about my family, but about me and why I should become the Speech and Debate Club lead.” The camera would follow Harry over, as he would take two steps to the right, stil facing the invisible audience “I am 17 years old and I am in 11th grade. I am just a student, but my goal in the future is to be the next Mayor of Karakura.”

What is your motivation to lead a club within the school? (250+ words)
A new scene appeared. Harry was doing a “mock” debate at a podium, except he was the only person in the view of the screen. Giving the camera a smile, “my motivation to start a Speech and Debate Club at Karakura High started when i was just eight years old when I was first introduced to public speaking while in boarding school. I would like to say I had a calling for public speaking, and was slowly introduced into the world of speech and debate. I was taught pretty much all of the events from Storytelling to Parliamentary debate. I did everything.” Harry spoke, using his hands as he spoke, waving his hands around, nothing too extravagant, just a enough to make his motivation speech more interesting “i spent the most of my time doing Parli and Original Advocacy, during my time at boarding school.”

“I may be new to this city, but my motivation to start a speech and debate club at this school is not because I did it for so long in boarding school, but it’s because Speech and Debate taught me and many others so many life lessons that I will be able to take with me. Speech and debate isn’t just doing speeches and debating silly little topics. Debate can teach you how to explain your own ideas and assess the different viewpoints of others opinions. It helps with public speaking, sharing your ideas into the world, reasserting, and sharing those ideas with evidence. There is so many other lessons that I plan on teaching the members of this club. In speech and debate, these skills help express their thoughts better in our academic work.”

Rounding the podium to stand in front of it, moving his hands to the sides “Speech and Debate has been apart of my life now since I was just a kid and it is what motivates me to bring this club to Karakura. I do also have two cousins, who are also club leaders. Whenever we chatted while I was away, I would hear their stories. They are also the ones motivating me to apply for this club. Also, there is a lot of famous celebrities that did speech and debate in high school who went onto do many successful things, such as Josh Gad who played Olaf in Frozen, Jessica Chastain who was in films such as ‘The Help’ and ‘Interstellar,’ Chris Colfer who was in the hit television show Glee, and even Zac Efron who played a ton of roles in film has done speech and debate. There so many other celebrities that have done Speech and Debate during their school years who have gone on to do so many great things.”

Why choose you over other candidates applying for this position? (50+ words)
One last clip appeared in front of your eyes. Harry Akori standing on a stage with twinkling lights as a background. In a suit, hair all done up nicely, this was it. The final speech he has to do “in speech and debate, majority of the time you are trying to persuade your stance on a topic or a current event. For this, I am trying to persuade you on why you should choose me to be a club leader and I am going to be doing exactly that, but in speech and debate style”

Taking the smallest step forward, he would begin “You should choose me over other candidates for this position for these three main reasons, I have years of experience, I have a passion for current events and research, I know how to be the best leader that I can be.

Let’s first start with the first reason. I have years of experience, and it’s true. As I have said in some of these previous clips, I started doing speech and debate when I was just a young kid while in boarding school and I have done it every year since and now I am 17 years old. I have almost 10 years of experience in speech and debate. With my experience, I will be able to share what I have experienced and learned with my time in boarding school and speech and debate there and be able to bring it over here.

Moving onto my next reason, I have a passion for current events and research. Another point I have mentioned, is that my dream is to become the next Mayor of Karakura. Now that does sound like a stretch, but hey a man can dream. I know there is a whole path that I would need to get there, but first I would love to become a lawyer to start with after I finish law school, but back to my point. The point is, that, in speech and debate, we are responsible of doing our own research when it comes to doing our speeches or debates. We use research and media outlooks to stay up to date with current events that are happening in our world. Speech and debate helps improve people’s ability to research, not just for the club, but for school work outside of the club as well.

Now onto my last point, I know to be the best that I can be. With the last two points I have made, I am able to bring all the things I have said to be the best leader I can. I can share my experience in the many years of speech and debate I have done to lead my club to do the best they can in their speeches and their debates. I can teach what I know with research and current events to make sure that my club members are getting the best information that they can. As a leader, I will be able to support and encourage my club members to do the best that they can do. I will motivate them to not just finish with the most basic speeches, but I am going motivate them to make the best speeches that they can write. This is how I can be the best leader that I can.

In conclusion, you should choose me to be a club leader over other candidates because I have the years of experience, I am very passionate in research and events, and I know that I will be the best leader for this club. I will take this club as far as I can. I will be an active club leader, helping out my members with anything they need and making sure they can be as successful as they can.”

At the end of his speech, he would give a small bow with his head, before walking out of frame. The video then faded to black with a flyer of Harry Akori, and a “Harry for Speech and Debate Club” subtitle.

Provide one school-wide event that your club may host
Speech and Debate tournament
Students of all ages and grades will be able to come participate in a speech and debate tournament. When the club event gets announced, there is going to be a google form attached to it, all students that want to participate in the event as a competitor, must fill it out. There will be a section for students to compete, and a section for school faculty to apply as a judge, may try to reach out to other factions to want to see about judging. For the people that join the event will be able to compete up to two events all together. All participants will get all information and materials needed to be able to have a fair chance at competing. Of course my club members will have a slight advantage to the tournament as we would have gone over the events a few times prior to the event, but will offer a workshop the day before to go over the events and the tournament, in the Speech and Debate Club discord. The only events that people will be able to compete in are the ones, that have the ability to be prepped last minutes and don’t needs weeks of prep. There will be two rounds, one with small groups and there will be a finals round with a large audience. There will be various judges to judge each round. At the end of the tournament, winners from each event will get trophies and a cash prize!

Provide one flash event that your club may host
SPAR Tournament
Spontaneous Argument, an event in Speech and Debate where two people go head-to-head in a debate. There is one affirmative and the other is the negation. The two will be given a topic where they will get a minute to prep their opening statements. They will have 2 OOC minutes to share their opening statements before going into a cross-examination for 5 minutes where they get to ask each other questions with civilized answers. Following the examination they will each do a 2 minute concluding statement. Winners per round isn’t selected based on what is right or wrong, but how the competitor can fight their case. Anyone is allowed to compete, but they will be going up against club members. Whoever wins the argument will be moving to the next round. There will be a prize for the winner that can debate the best! Below is how a SPAR round will look like, times and everything can be adjusted according to the needs of the players and the server.

Provide one club activity that your club might host
Mock trial with government officials
Most activities we will be doing in the club is going to be based around the different speech and debate events, but one event that we would hopefully be able to do is a mock trial with government officials. How it will work, is a club member and government work is going to be paired up and be given a role, whether its a judge, governor, witness, lawyer, etc. and there is going to be one general trial case. It will be based off of a civil court case that has happened, with added or taken away detail and name changes of course. With that the club member and government worker will do the role they need to do, prep a case, gather information, evidence and we will put together a mock trial. If we are unable to do this activity without government workers, we are still able to do this activity without them present.

Additional Notes:
  • This application is for Speech and Debate, if I need to cut the Speech portion and just do debate, that is totally fine
  • There will be a google doc of Speech and Debate topics for both speech and debate events that are SRP appropriate, the listen is able to be shorten and will be expanded over time. If there is ever a topic that I question about, I will come to either Club lead or other SLT to get approval. All topics will be based around SRP current events unless noted other wise. There will be some OOC pop culture topics. It will only be shared with club higher ups and SLT.
