SRP Social Struggles Pt2-Community Shift

Hey everyone,

I used to be a really active player on SchoolRP starting all the way back in 2018, and I stuck around for about three years. During that time, I made great friends, had tons of fun, and genuinely enjoyed being part of what felt like a creative and welcoming community.

I recently came back hoping to experience that same vibe — but honestly, things feel different now. It’s a lot harder to connect with people, and the atmosphere doesn’t feel as chill or open as it used to.

Coming back after a while, it's been a little cloudy for me remembering how to properly roleplay or navigate certain parts of the server. Naturally, I’ve needed a bit of help getting back into the groove. But instead of people being patient or open to helping, I’ve mostly gotten snarky messages or passive-aggressive responses — like being told things are “obvious” or being mocked for not immediately knowing every command or shortcut. That kind of attitude makes it even harder to feel welcome again.

To top it off, I had a recent interaction where my character chose to ignore some in-character flirting — nothing dramatic at all. But through /looc, the other player got rude, calling my character ugly and saying things like “my character would never date a namemc.” Then another player, presumably their friend, kept chiming in with “nothing is funny” — apparently just because I typed “LMAO,” which is literally just how I type. I don’t take it personally, honestly it’s laughable, but it’s still annoying. Roleplay isn’t meant to be taken that seriously — especially not to the point where it turns into actual hostility through looc.

It’s disappointing, because I remember SRP being fun, creative, and full of people who supported each other and didn’t act like they were above others. Now, it feels more cliquey, less open to new or returning players, and honestly kind of discouraging.

Just wanted to share this experience and see if anyone else who’s come back after a break has noticed a shift in the community too. Would love to know if it’s just bad luck or if others feel the same.
Anyone else returning after a break and feeling this change?

There are a few people who remember the 2018+ era. Not many. But few are still around. They managed to get into factions and create groups that match their playstyle. Many online communities evolve over time. I think all returning players notice changes in RP dynamics. I'm quite certain that you’re not alone in feeling this way. Cliques are reliable sources of high quality RP. They offer inside jokes and long-term narratives.

Veteran Player vs. Greenie divide is pretty common in long-running servers. Your feelings are valid! I hope you don’t let it discourage you for long. I'm sure you can find your people if you look long enough. With some experience, you can spot and avoid players who take RP way too seriously soon.

Also, hostile flirting is a thing. Reasonable players react to /looc messages in that regard. You can maybe look for interesting school clubs to join (I can always suggest the Occult Club for example) and maybe go to TryOuts for the Sports Teams?

Veteran player here, I understand how you feel! I returned to SRP back in mid 2023 and the atmosphere has changed. It is harder to connect with people and just overall communicate with others due to everyone have their own clique groups nowadays. However, don't let that discourage you from trying to make friends. It can be difficult at first but the reward of trying might give you some good friends.

Take Erik's advice try to get out there by checking out school clubs or tryouts for sport teams. Maybe even look at the factions on the server that caught your eye. There is something out there for you, you just have to figure out what it is. Feel free to hmu on discord @ kustomzero or if you see my characters Lando Lawson or Franklyn Lee feel free to chat to them they're my chill characters. :D

For me technically speaking I may not be a Veteran like Erik or Kustom, but I would also suggest joining a faction can help leverage you to have more Roleplay opportunities and be part of a group you may feel at home with. Sure you do have to apply and get accepted in the first place, but the comradery you experience from a faction job is just a great feeling in general.

Every year or so I start to notice the changes since like... 2021/2022 as well. I feel that I've never noticed extreme negative shifts, but each year always might have something different about it that I might like or not like. I would hope that most of the people in the community don't treat each other how you were treated and that you just met some bad apples. If you need help with RP and figuring out all the new stuff I (and I'm sure a bunch of other people) would definitely be open to help you with that
