What is it about the new SRP shading style that feels so much more pleasing compared to the old one?

Ever since the change, I’ve been curious.
I've always preferred the older shading style.
I feel as though the older shading was more detailed, in general, it just looked . . nicer. ? And people like less-detailed, practically free work? I don't know, this is all opinion-based.

Older shading - Skins from (may or may not by idk) IsZmanBatman14, E1Kay, NyxRP

Newer Shading - Directly from my Namemc, E1kay's, or TheEz8Fury

Now, don't get me wrong - They all look good, just a bit more detailed, at least in my eyes of older shading.

Even with items, the older shading looks nicer - Granted the pack was too "large" back then, but it's still the point that counts. (using masks as examples)
Old Shading - New Shading Imgur

THESE ARE NOT THE SAME MASKS! Just the closest masks that I could find that looked similar.
By no means are any of them bad - The old shading just looks 1 million times better, that is all.

OPINION BASED!

The new one is unsaturated, barely shaded, doesnt look distinguishable/the style looks the exact same to every single tailor with color palettes and shading being the same/re-used.. same with patterns and outfits. The new colors are much ''softer'', I have noticed people doing the base of a color saturated and then shading it with a very unsaturated color/gray color. I'm bad at explaining this, but I'm only including for the people that do this particular style which has gotten very popular. The blonde base in your post can be used as an example, it goes from blonde to really gray, very very bright eyes and soft colors. I think you get the idea.

Nowadays, you can't really tell (most) people apart, that's just my opinion, but almost every skin looks the same.

The older shading on the other hand was somewhat indifferent and you could actually tell the tailor by the style, shading and colors. It had it's unique patterns although being simplistic, designs looked better, outfits looked cleaner because not everything is clashed together, bright colors, the head bases were very nice, quirky and yet looked realistic.

Tailoring has gotten very popular over the years of like, 2022-2024 as more people have gotten into it. There's nothing wrong with having an unique style, it's just preference. While your examples are also not exactly the ones I got in mind/thought of, both old and new, but it works. Keep in mind, I am not hating on the new style, it's nice if it's done right, is what I'm saying.

I much more prefer the newer shading style. Although also like the old one at the same time upon certain skins, I'm really picky when it comes to skins! Just from a buyer perspective I would go more for the newer shading style, it looks pretty.

The shading style has changed quite a bit over the years ^_^..
(Don't come for me yawl this is all opiniony stuff :33)

[!!!] Warning, I yap a lot and I'm tired so if this sounds wonky that's why. I also rarely comment on stuff but I love this thread so woohoo

So, here's my thoughts >.<

My thoughts on newer shading!! :O

- It's softer, I personally enjoy softer shading rather than super "pixely" kind of skins. Adding further to the softer thing, I do play games like Terraria a lot, so don't get me wrong I absolutely adore pixely stuff but imo.. My fun in making skins was making characters look like they have very unique features without it looking too blocky or 'detailed' at all. :D

- It's smooth and it's very very fun to see the lighting come from a specific direction (or at least that's what I always saw it as..)
- (Also.. I can't for the life of me make for example a tattoo in older shading, but I very much can make tats with newer shading. It takes practice )
- It's MUCH easier to make gradients and stuff too, specifically while maintaining the actual look of it being 'shaded' :3
My thoughts on older shading!! :O
- If you like detailed shading and a lot of colors in a small space then detailed shading is by far one of the prettiest and most eye pleasing things you can go with. I see older shading as something one could describe as 'eye candy'.. Mm yyummyy..
- You can also make shapes more distinguished (imo) in more detailed shading, but ive always struggled to dew that. . :(
- It does take a lot of time to learn and imo it's always been a big struggle for me, but that's not to say I haven't made detailed skins before.

- (I've made some detailed skins before, but i always tend to struggle w/making the skintone look good and what not.. (face shading is my enemy in either shading lol)
- But one of my favorite things about older shading.. Is hair. I love old hair shading, I'll always love older hair shading.. The way skins came out with dyed hair was SOOO stinking cute like wahhh.. I loved it sm and I honestly miss it a LOT.
- Older shading was also much brighter it seems, and while it was GREAT, it was just not my kinda thing :(

Conclusion YAYA
Overall, I like both styles but my preference will remain 'newer shading' even though it changes probably a bit too frequently. :3
Imo, every tailor has their prefered way of making things. While it may be hard to see, some can tell the difference from one tailor to another. Me and my partner have spent a very long time trying to catch people who 'steal skins', and because of this. . We've kind of memorized a lot of tailors styles. Spending so much time looking and seeing other peoples's styles made me have quite a bit of appreciation towards the dedication people put into making skins for other people, or for themselves.

I hope you all have a wonderful day :3

I'm excited to see what other people say about this topic :D

I think the old shading is very harsh while the newwer one, albiet much softer, balances out the colours much better. For my own shading style, I use a mix of two because I love the darker shading but don't like how harsh it is. The new shading is a solid meh for me because most colours blend a little too well together.

im just gonna keep it simple cause im multi tasking sooo hard rn. this is just my silly opinion, speaking from my experience as a tailor and growing modeler

COLOR WISE (SKIN CONTEXT):
When it comes to colors, I think new shading wins. This ranges from tailor to tailor, BUT as a tailor who likes very bright colors, the current shading style allows for more subtle transitions (you know me and gradients!!)

SHAPE AND COMPOSITION (SKIN CONTEXT):
Shape and composition wise, I also think new shading takes the bait. I feel like the more intricate color schemes that allow for intermediate colors and smooth transitions in smaller elements to stand out. Old shading is definitely a lot clunkier and makes the skin seem very cramped (help english?? i think)

SHADING PATTERNS AND ORIGINALITY (SKIN CONTEXT):
Now, here is where old shading steps up. You'd think that the current shading styles and palettes would free up a lot more variety and room for differences, but the sad truth is that yeah- you can't tell tailors apart anymore. It's actually gotten so bad, that tailors that used to stand out have blended back into the rest of the community- along with their actual shading patterns being so light that it's impossible to see it clearly (i am very guilty of this, i am so sorry OG menmapsy_ skin enjoyers)

COLOR WISE (MODEL CONTEXT):
New shading has brought a LOT of vibrancy into models, and honestly, it's nice to see how colorful it is. You notice a lot more neutrals in old models, but they do match the references pretty darn closely.

SHAPE AND COMPOSTION (MODEL CONTEXT):
By a mile, old shading wins. The level of complexity that models used to display was other worldly- and honestly, I believe that's exactly how customs should be. Complex trinkets that stand out from the default pixels? Yum.

SHADING PATTERNS AND ORIGINALITY (MODEL CONTEXT):
Old shading wins again. Something that I'd like to bring up is cars- if old shading/old models were still a thing after cars came out, you would easily be able to tell who made what car. The SRP modelers are so talented, so along with being actually able to see them put in another level of their own creativity into designs, you'd also get a lot more shapes and variety.

again, these are just my opinions. menmapsy thinky think. hmmm, they seem pretty even, in different contexts. 3-3. just depends on what you're using it for maybe!

could anyone post an example of this ''gradient'' thing or is it just the new highlighted shading

It feels "better" because everyone's using it. Back in the day, when players would all have that distinguished rough shading, nobody ever complained about it being bad or annoying to look at. As a matter of fact, when this shading was introduced to SRP (fun fact, it was called "aman shading" before it became the norm thanks to the tailor who mainstreamed it), people said that it was bad and had no shading at all.

It's a matter of who's using it, really

I'll have to differ here. We're playing Minecraft, not Trove or CubeWorld. Minecraft is not a voxel game, meaning that having those complex shapes in game not only increases the resource-pack size tenfold (To exemplify it, this model went from 150 KB to less than 10 KB) but it also throws people off. Compare a diamond helmet to that first model. You can clearly tell which model belongs to the game natively. Is it more detailed? Evidently. Is it better? Not when you're comparing it to Minecraft

Old shading vs. new shading is hard to compare because of their differences and how subjective art is! As Yonio said, it's similar to trends; people like what is popular and "new." I made a whiteboard for anybody curious about how shading has changed over the past five years:
Skin Comparisons

Ultimately, it comes down to skin-makers and what they enjoy personally, which dictates what most of the server will adjust to. I'd love to see the older shading from 2019-2020 paired with the colors of the current shading; I think that would be prettyy!
