Hellooo! Unsure if this will be moved to general despite it being a guide but hi! You have read the title and decided to click on it. Let me give you a little info first of all, snakes are NOT on the whitelist sadly, I'd love them to be though but yknow, you don't always get your way in life.

This is a guide on almost how to rp your character(s) having a snake, it will use lots of /it's and /me's to make it accurate. I do know quite highly that a snake and any reptile for that matter is an actual animal and not an item but due to there being no whitelist for it, there will have to be itemrp. I and some others have been roleplaying as snake keepers like this and there have been absolutely NO complaints about it so do not worry about that part!

First and foremost, you need to choose your snake type and its morph. I have a little list of snakes here and some aren't suitable although I will list more that aren't in the picture. Your character should NOT have any (highly) venomous snake as that is a huge safety hazard. Mildly venomous snakes like false water cobras (Usually isn't accepted as a first-time keeper snake), hognose snakes and mangrove snakes are okay (Usually isn't accepted as a first-time keeper snake).

file was too big

Here are some snakes, some are highly venomous, some are perfectly okay!
Details on the snakes listed in the photo:

Reticulated Python - Poisonous Venomous Neither
Banana Ball Python - Poisonous Venomous Neither
Wild Type Hognose - Poisonous Venomous Neither ( Slight venom, won't do much to the human body. Although do not pick one up in the wild)
Western Diamondback Rattler - Poisonous Venomous Neither (Do NOT go near these, the venom causes hospitalization)
Green Anaconda - Poisonous Venomous Neither
Mangrove Snake - Poisonous Venomous Neither ( Slight venom, won't do much to the human body. Although do not pick one up in the wild)
Just your basic boa - Poisonous Venomous Neither
California Red-Sided Garter - Poisonous Venomous Neither ( Slight venom, won't do much to the human body. Although do not pick one up in the wild)
Argentine Boa - Poisonous Venomous Neither

Some other snakes that your oc might be interested in (These will not have extra info in this forum. Please do your own research and ask me any questions for a certain snake!)
Bullsnake - Poisonous Venomous Neither
Ratsnake - Poisonous Venomous Neither
Cornsnake - Poisonous Venomous Neither
Milksnake - Poisonous Venomous Neither

Now, let's talk about more info! Like how big do they get, UV requirements, heatlamp temperature, how heavy they get, defense mechanisms and more!

Reticulated Python - Malayopython reticulatus (And any ball python - Python regius - really.)
Size
Male: Ten to Fourteen feet (Three to Four-point-two meters)
Female: At least sixteen feet (Four-point-eight meters) but may grow to twenty (Six meters)

UVB requirements

They do not infact need UVB lighting to survive unless in a darker room, this should NOT affect the ambient heat too much

Heat lamp temperature

A reticulated python should have from 31 degrees celsius to 33 degrees celsius as their heatlamp temperature (90-92 in Fahrenheit)

Weight
Male : 2.2 - 165 pounds (1kg to 75kg)
Female : 10 - 165 pounds (4.5kg to 75kg)

Defence Mechanisms

Reticulated Ball Pythons are known to curl up into a ball to protect their head and any vital organs when they believe they are going to get attacked by a predator.

Diet

Their diet out in the wild consists of: Wild Boar, birds, fish, rats, chickens, small primates they find in Asia and basically anything else that is possible to consume.

Vivarium size (Max and Min)

The minimum size of a vivarium for smaller ball pythons is at least 2 feet tall, 3 feet wide and six feet long to maybe eight feet in certain situations. The maximum is around 3 feet tall, 4 feet wide and ten feet long.

The average amount of eggs/babies in one clutch/litter (Female only)

Most Ball Python clutches are around 4-6 eggs. Although it will vary as some may turn out to be slugs (unfertilized eggs) and some may go mouldy mid-incubation process for absolutely no explainable reason.

Wild Type Hognose Snake - Heterodon nasicus
Size
Male : 14-24 inches (1.1 feet to 2 feet.)
Female : 16-24 inches (1.3 feet to 2 feet. Some may grow to 3 feet though)

UVB requirements

It is better to require UVB as it will help show what being in the wild would be like although this is optional.

Heat lamp temperature

32.2 degrees-35 degrees celsius on the warmer side (90-95 Fahrenheit)

Weight

Male : 60-120 grams
Female : 150-maybe 350 grams

Defense Mechanisms

Hognose snakes in the wild (fresh babies will do this in captivity) will roll over and play dead, sticking out their tongue. They are horrified of what they think is a predator and sometimes will pop a vein in their mouth to seem as unappealing and gross and diseased as possible. Sometimes even regurgitate on special occasions.

Diet

An adult hognose snake will eat things like frogs or small toads in the wild but will take things like mice and small birds like chicks.

Vivarium size (Max and Min)
Max: 3 foot vivarium in length
Min: 2 foot or a larger tub

The average amount of eggs/babies in one clutch/litter (Female only)

Between 5 and 30 eggs although usually, it's around 7-15. Females may eat their eggs though and see them as a post-pregnancy meal due to needing food soon after laying.

Western Diamondback Rattlesnake - Crotalus atrox - (Not recommended as a pet, usually a zoo animal or under amazing, careful care of a TRAINED individual)
Size
Male : 4-6 feet
Female : 4-6 feet

UVB requirements

They require a UVB lamp

Heat lamp temperature

78 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (25.5 degrees Celsius to 32.2 degrees celsius)

Weight
Male : 9kg (20 pounds)
Female : 9kg (20 pounds)

Defense Mechanisms

Rattlesnakes are known for their super cool rattle! But what actually is it used for? Usually when threatened (not really often) they will slither away and hide but if the so-called predator knows where they are they will rattle their rattle and hiss to scare away said predator. If that doesn't work they will result to biting and inject their deadly venom into the predator and wait for it to run/fly away before dropping dead on the floor and they find it as a free meal.

Diet

The western diamondback snake is known for its rattle bands (haha funny pun) but that's not the point. A W.DB is known to eat creatures like mice, rats, rabbits, gophers, ground-living birds and much more

Vivarium size (Max and Min)
Max: 50-55 gallon (adult)
Min: 40 gallon (Adult)

The average amount of eggs/babies in one clutch/litter (Female only)

They are known for birthing at least 25 young in their litter, wow!

Green Anaconda - Eunectes murinus
Size
Male : 7-14 feet (Depending on the food size and how frequent but I do NOT suggest power feeding as it causes a food-driven snake which will bite more often and those bites are not at all wanted)
Female : 11-13 feet

UVB requirements

They do not require Ultra-Violet lighting but this is optional!

Heat lamp temperature

Around 88-92 degrees Fahrenheit (31-33 degrees Celsius)

Weight
Male : Unsure, around the weight of a female though
Female : They CAN weigh 550 pounds (250 kg)

Defense Mechanisms

They will give a nasty bite then constrict their predator in hopes of eating it or sometimes just killing it if it's not their natural diet or too big for them.

Diet

Their diet mainly consists of fish, reptiles (including caiman), amphibians, tapirs, deer, dogs and much more.

Vivarium size (Max and Min)

Max: 8 foot long, 3 feet wide and 2 foot tall (for a larger female, possibly a larger male too)
Min: 6 feet long, 3 feet wide and 11⁄2 feet tall (for an average sized male, smaller female)

The average amount of eggs/babies in one clutch/litter (Female only)

Two to three dozen of babies in a single litter!

Mangrove Snake - Boiga dendrophila
Size
Male : 6-7 feet
Female : 6-7 feet

UVB requirements

Boiga dendrophila do NOT require it although optional. If there are LIVE plants, UVB is actually required.

Heat lamp temperature

85-95 degrees Farenheit

Weight
Male : Weight is not specified
Female : Weight is not specified

Defense Mechanisms

Boiga do not have any listed defense mechanisms. This species is still undergoing information take-in by professionals.

Diet

Their diet usually consists of small species of lizards, snakes, birds, and mammals. (NOT humans)

Vivarium size (Max and Min)
Max: 8 feet long, 5 feet wide, 7 feet tall
Min: 7 feet long, 4 feet wide, 6 feet tall

The average amount of eggs/babies in one clutch/litter (Female only)

Four to fifteen eggs in a clutch

A normal boa - Boa constrictor - of any kind (Sub-species may differ)
Size
Male : Average of a 7-15 feet
Female : Average of a 7-15 feet

UVB requirements

They benefit highly off of UVB lighting

Heat lamp temperature

80-95 degrees Fahrenheit on the warmer side

Weight
Male : 20-30 pounds
Female : 22-33 pounds

Defense Mechanisms

They will rely on striking the predator OR releasing a smelly, poop like substance called musk.

Diet

They will and can eat almost anything they can catch, including (but not limited to) birds, monkeys, and wild pigs.

Vivarium size (Max and Min)

Max : 72x24x24 inch (Larger female, maybe larger male too)
Min : 48x24x24 inch (Smaller male, a youngling female)

The average amount of eggs/babies in one clutch/litter (Female only)

The average is around 25 babies but they can birth up to sixty!

Garter Snakes - Thamnophis sirtalis - (These are a co-habbing species and need others (of the same gender) with them to almost live)
Size
Male : Up to 100 centimetres
Female : Up to 100 centimetres

UVB requirements

They require and need UVB in their vivarium

Heat lamp temperature

On the warmer side, it should be from 90-95 degrees fahrenheit

Weight
Male : 150g
Female : 150g

Defense Mechanisms

They will let out a poop-like, smelly substance called musk if they feel threatened or believe there is a predator

Diet

The garter snake diet MUST fluctuate between all foods every week (fed once every week). This consists of: fish (mainly chopped up), inverts, small rodents and smaller amphibians

Vivarium size (Max and Min)

Max: 200 cm long, 33 cm wide, 66 cm tall
Min: 100 cm long, 33 cm wide, 33 cm tall

The average amount of eggs/babies in one clutch/litter (Female only)

Around 10-30 in a litter.

Now you know most needed information on some snakes that are popular! Please do your own research before making your oc have a pet snake!

Extra info:
They MUST have the vivarium at least 2-5 days WITH heatlamp on for the daytime to make sure it's the right temperature and keeps it steady
They CANNOT hold their snake within 2 weeks of owning it. A new home is very scary and it may cause the animal to refuse food.
Please stay in seriousrp with this, do not make your oc continue annoying their pet snake if it's hissing and clearly stressed.
Don't just leave the snake there in a viv. Actually rp feeding it or handling it!
Do not make your oc handle the snake within 2-3 days of feeding it so it doesn't regurgitate.
Make sure your oc gives it good husbandry, cleaning poops, cleaning pee (it's not liquid, like a bird poop almost), changing bedding every few months, change water, clean waterbowl.

If you are not sure how to bring this animal into roleplay or do an /it or /me about it, use something like this!

/it As the two/three/group walked into the room, there was a (however big) vivarium with(out) a snake inside. (If there is a snake) It was a (snake species) curled up beneath it's heatlamp and seemed to be very chill, tongue flicking every few minutes and didn't seem to blink.. Weird.. (If there isn't any snake yet) Beneath the heatlamp was nothing.. The viv seemed dormant of some sort..? Was there actually a snake inside of there? Or was it just empty for the time being?

/me walked up to the vivarium and slid open the door (if there is a snake) and then slowly pulled out a (whatever snake species) before turning around and walking to the couch, sitting down with the snake. (No snake yet) and peeked their head inside to check both thermometers on the walls of the cool and warm side, making sure the temperature was stable for the time being.
