i thank you....... ive tried shading about 20 times at this point, and have always failed, or given up because it was too difficult for my pea brain to understand...

so far this is enough for my pea brain to understand

While I do make skins occasionally, the hair definitely isn’t up to par on most of them (aside from Kyung-ho, one of my many characters). This helps a lot, especially with that and clothing! <3

not really no..... theres a method to shading
The method involves aligning plaid and plaid adjacent patterns while keeping one side lighter than the other, in order to create a visually pleasing aesthetic.

But if you strip away all the long tedious bits, it's just plaid^2, can't change my mind.

my shading is different than SRP's standard, i use ambient occlusion to determine where i should add shadow and then "unga bunga pixels go brrr" until it looks good. Rather than focusing on one light source, I just shade the parts where things would be really close together and/or overlapping (like the crease between the arm and torso, between the legs, in the volumes of hair, etc).

SRP tailors can't utilize this method very well because it requires a more blended shading, whereas SRP favors hard transitions between light and dark. And with this particular shading style, it's especially difficult to make lines that would realistically be curved look good, so most people tend to keep their shadows very straight; when you overlap a bunch of straight vertical and horizontal lines, you get patterns that look very plaid.

I reshaded the same skin using this tutorial and the RPH #skins channel as a reference, while also keeping in mind the locations of the shadows from the original.

Whether or not it's intentional on your end, plaid is an inevitability of the SRP style which nobody can escape.
