Do you think Karakura still feels like a Japanese city? Why, or why not? What do you think could be done to make the city feel more culturally authentic?

oh ABSOLUTELY NOT!
I'm not an expert on Japan.
Not by a far stretch.
but Karakura doesn't feel Japanese.

Karakura still has this Japanese coat of paint. but to me it DOES NOT feels or resemble a Japanese place at all.
It feels more like a kind of junk-drawer dimension where pieces of Japan, American high-school media, and crime drama, and anime, and GTA, and general discord/blockgame roleplay chaos have all been thoroughly blended and mashed together.
so... Karakura kinda relates to Japan like GTA relates to LA or Red Dead relates to the historical West.

It's mostly inspired and exaggerated, and compressed, and reshaped and warped and it works to completely different cultural rules.

If the goal is authentically Japanese SRP..... I think the biggest improvement would be to focus less on adding obviously Japanese objects and more on all the mundane social structures. For example... Schools operate a very distinct way in Japan. Businesses too!
There are neighborhood associations and rules about public transport and local government and seasonal events are done a specific way and Not to mention the ETIQUETTE!
There are so many small expectations of everyday public behavior that Karakura simply completely inverts.

Karakura is a chaotic Western sandbox.
And while I'm literally the guy who purchased 1000+ customs... the solution is likely not adding more japanese coded stuff.
Authenticity would (if aimed at) come from making players and places in this town BEHAVE Japanese.

Erik basically said everything I would. There’s SO MUCH different, especially with the culture. It is not at all close, even despite the label

Plz see ErikFinster’s lovely comment above for context thanks

Culturally Karakura feels more like the VERY heart of Tokyo in terms of the amount of BS you'd find there (I have friends who lived in Japan see the Server and thats what they say). But for me personally no this feels more like America or some part of the UK.

Sadly not at all. I personally tend to only play japanese characters JUUUUST to keep things grounded as one of the only grounded people on srp.. sad reality tsk tsk.. meet the russians, the espanolas and so on

just cause it doesnt necessarily 'feel' japanese doesnt mean its a bad thing, it means its got its own identity. i used to think that i MUST force japanese things onto the server with the lore in 2022, but ive changed my opinion to adapting the lore to the server. because first and foremost, karakura is written by the players for the players

if ben doesnt FLIPPING NAME EVERY SINGLE NPC AND ITS SHOP AND BUILDING A BRITISH NAME IM GOING TO FLIP OUT AND COMMIT AARSON AND ANARCHY. IM MAKING THIS A PUBLIC WAR.

other than that, karakura doesnt NEED to feel japanese, it needs to feel right for the players. if ur char is an american? it gotta make sense. im not forcing players to make japanese chars.

BUT! i wish if more people created NATIVE Karakurans, not just Japanese, but PEOPLE OF KARAKURA. for lore reasons.

only 8% of the census answers that i did were born in karakura, so increase that number for me pls

Maybe make more npc's with japanese names?

No, the server has never felt Japanese. This is not a bad thing despite some people complaining - it's a modern setting, multicultural viewpoints are bound to exist. Tying to the somewhat recent suggestion of adding more languages, an intrinsic part of such a server is that, simply, there will be cultures people are not comfortable RPing within. I am not comfortable, for example, playing a character of African extent because I am white and can not respectfully portray a black character.

It's well known my OG character Piper was somewhat of a self-insert, at least personality wise, as I tried to develop my understanding of RP within the medium. My FRP character, likewise, was a self-insert more or less, but with a focus on 'there's Dwarven culture I have to adapt to, so I must spend time learning the culture'. Ayako, my most recent before being perm muted for a joke, was an attempt at the polar opposite.

But yeah, to save rambling, it's a city inspired by Japan, not a Japanese city.

Throwback to 2020 when a new map was promised as well, relevant throwback to the discussion :)

Thank you for your suggestion!

- My characters will not be retconned as they are in the lore. From this day foward, Kaito Akiyama will be leading the Lore Team and Government faction.

Many thanks for your continued support,
