What I'm thinking is making the tunnels open up to new areas of the island.

I'm half and half. The idea sounds fun, but there is no room to put it. The forest isn't a good place to really add anything. Bears live in the forest and they already don't have a lot of space to hang around with just being in the forest and the cave, which the cave isn't that big. Bears can't even go to the shrine.
