Exploration guide

Welcome to the jungle.

To the Reader.
While I have indeed done some good research on Urbex forums when writing this list, and I also tried to keep it realist in terms of what to bring and what to do etc.. This is not an IRL intended guide, it does not cover all the details I would like it to. KUERT remains a fictional group after all and is in no way realist, an example of why this is not the case would be vandalism, when doing Urbex, you do not publicly list all places and share them around, because vandals will find the place and trash it over completly. This does not exist in SRP which allows KUERT to publicly share POIs.

If you wish for more in detail guides, forum urbex communities, for example reddit's, are a good place to start researching. Remember, be careful out there and do not lose your North.
With care and hope.

Introduction to Urban Exploration
Blackbar.png
Urban exploration is the action of finding and exploring places, almost always abandoned in Urban or sometimes rural, areas. However it might be dangerous to explore the places of Karakura without knowing the basic information, recommendations and dangers, listed in this page.

Preparation
Blackbar.png
Preparation is crucial, here is our recommendations about preparing oneself.

Planning
Graybar.png
The place you put as your objective will determine what set of items, time you spend, and how many people should come with you. You should always prepare yourself by checking the list of environmental threats, entities and entrances and exits of the place if they are available in the KUERT POI LIST, as you will have a better idea of what place you are dealing with.

Another thing to take into account is the weather, places found outdoors might become impossible or too risky to explore during storms and thunders, so checking the weather beforehand will be necessary sometimes.

Have someone to got your back
Graybar.png
You are highly recommended to tell confidants you are going to go to explore or to even bring friends along with you. Exploring along people is what ultimately makes the experience fun, and safer. Friends can help you escape risky situations, make the group feel more protected and help you access places that might be impossible to reach on solo. Having experienced friends with you is even better.

What should you bring.
Graybar.png
Preparing oneself for going to explore is always important, it can be the difference between having a good time with friends, or getting lost in the sewers for two hours (even more). So what should I be bringing to my exploration? You may ask. Well here is a list of recommended items.

Food
Graybar.png
You cannot explore without a full stomach, therefore you should always bring food with you, especially if you are going to spend a lot of time exploring. You should always bring some tasty treats for you, energy bars can be one of them. Exploring sometimes requires you to do exercise and depending on the place you will be doing a lot of work, therefore an energy bar is always good in your pockets. Water is also an important resource, most of the times, whether it be in the forest or in the sewers, all environmental water is polluted in some way, and getting thirsty when you are left with an empty bottle is no good. Hence you must always bring good amounts of water with you.

Clothes and other wear.
Graybar.png
Wearing blackout attires is always done by gangs, but usually they are not made to be ripped apart or torn, they are in fact not the optimal clothing style for urban exploration. After doing a bit of research we found out that the most similar activity to urban exploration is hiking and trekking. might not be the most stylish option but mud, dirt and water will ruin any good outfit you have.

So a list of good wear to bring would be the following.
  • Trekking wear: Exactly, no cool outfits, no kimonos. You are entering a abandoned building, your clothing is going to get damaged and worn, hiking clothing is made exactly for these environments.
  • Hiking boots: They offer good traction, and protection against sharp debris (rusty scrap and nails, glass shards), mud and water puddles. Also, when doing urbex, you are likely going to either climb or walk on steep surfaces, in that case, you want not to slip and fall.
  • Very thick and resistant gloves, mechanic's gloves are the best. No using half finger gloves, they may look cool, but if you get cut, that glove won't take the damage and you may get Tet****. They are also decent to holding on to surfaces and climbing.
  • At least some sort of respiration filter: A P100 NIOSH rated mask is recommended. Being P100 means that the mask has the following properties: It is oil-resistant and filters 99.75% of airborne solid and liquid particles. This is important, because it will filter asbestos and silica particles, mold and other colloidal particles in the air. However, bear in mind it does not protect against gasses, that means it is rendered useless against CO₂ for example.

We also recommend treating urban exploration as a normal sport, this means you should clean your exploration clothes, no matter if you have been in the sewers or going into some trekking trail into an sketchy cabin in the middle of nowhere. Because no matter what you do, you will stink. you. will. stink. a. lot.

Utilities
Graybar.png
So not only do you wish to bring good wear, but also good utilities. This is important because

  • Phone: Yes obviously, it is good to bring a phone, but in addition to bringing a phone, consider charging it to its fullest, putting it inside a water resistant bag and all that sort of thing. It is your only way to communicate with the outside world.

Entering and exiting
Blackbar.png
Entering is almost always, not a big day, most of the places are easy to access and don't require you to think twice before going in. However some entrances might be dangerous or harder to access. So always go for the easiest entrance or exit.

Entities
Blackbar.png
Places will have entities, all of them have. Some are human and others are not. Depending on the place you will find more entities or less entities.

Non-human entities
Graybar.png
For all non-human entities, you should always keep a distance as they might be infectious and sick.
  • Lesser vermin: Small rats, roaches, spiders: They are usually inoffensive and won't ever hurt you. They might be disgusting but not a threat.
  • Middle sized animals: Wild dogs, foxes, stray cats: Anything stray might be too territorial for you to approach, therefore, staying away from them might be a good idea.
  • Big animals: Bears: You should never get close to one. NEVER.
Human entities
Graybar.png
Finding humans is relatively safer and depends on the type of person you find, here is a list of people you might be able to find during your exploration.
  • KUERT agents: Masked and in outfit, they will offer you help and guidance towards the place you are looking for. We sometimes carry food or water. However do not approach masked people as you might be confusing them with not so friendly individuals.
  • Explorers: Normal people who go to places to have fun time and explore the area. Depends on the person but they will usually be friendly.
  • Masked people: They usually will be wearing blackout attires. Some of them are criminals some of them not, but they do not like random people approaching them. You should keep your distance and leave if told. Do not think of getting your phones because they might take them if you hold them, it will be seen as an act of calling KPD and they don't like that.
They are more likely to be found in the underground or the power-plant.
You might also see them in groups, that usually means they are from a gang and that they are meeting, therefore you should stay away from the place.
  • KPD: They will usually be distinguished by their uniform, ballistic masks and tranquilizer guns. You should also stay away from them, I assume that you, reader have nothing to hide, but still, it is always an unpleasant experience. However do not try to outrun them when they tell you to halt as they will get angrier and it is almost impossible to outrun them.
You are unlikely to bump into them but they are much more likely to be found in the sewers.
  • Ghosts: [See DOI-002]: Paranormal and inexplicable events will warn you from the presence of a paranormal, you are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to get away from that place immediately. Another recommendation is to consider all ghosts dangerous, except Paranormals like Kitsa.

Environmental threats.
Blackbar.png
There are many different environmental threats. Here is a list with all known environmental threats. Here is the list of which you can face in the underground.
  • Reduced/No signal: The place has low or no signal. Emphasis on giving notice of your departure to your friends before hand, especially if you are going outside of town. Places susceptible to this are, locations within mountains, very rural areas of Karakura, underground areas and more.
  • Risk of flooding: The place could be flooded easily. To counter this, don't go to the place during monsoons or powerful storms. Places susceptible to this are lower levels of buildings, and underground locations. Floods can also severely damage the building structure.
  • Risk of collapse: Certain sections of the enclosure could crumble or break easily. To counter this, be extremely careful, get a protection helmet and run out of the place at sight of any danger. Places that are susceptible to collapse are not always easy to detect, the best way to know is to enter carefully from the base level of the area and check the ceiling, if it looks unstable, it is unstable. However, lets get into the specifics.
    • Concrete: Not all concrete builds the same, certain mixes are used to be exposed to the elements and harsh weather conditions while others were made to hold up the interior of a building. As a result, a concrete floor of what used to be a bedroom will not be as safe to step on as the concrete that comprises the top of an abandoned hospital would be. So areas exposed to the elements which were not created to be such, are likely not as stable as they were intended to be.
    • Steel: Steel can resist being exposed to the elements at most. Corrosion is a good indicator of structural damage. If you are going to step on a corroded metal walkway or use a steel ladder, give it a good shake, and check how it reacts to it. Steel suffers a lot of corrosion in the sewers due to this process being accelerated in acidic environments.
    • Wood: Wood is one of the less common materials in industrial places, but it is also one of the most complex. Wood can be subject to expansion, reduction of hardness and density and rotting when exposed to moist environments.
  • Blackout: There is no light in the place. Bring a flashlight to counter this threat.
  • Criminal hotspot: Criminals might come there to do training or meet. Try to come when no one is around to evade them. If you come across them and you are in their territory, it will be easy to talk your way out of there by not being confrontational and assuring them you will leave immediately.
  • Ghostly aspect: Ghosts usually show up at the place. Bring protective charms to defend yourself and cautiously leave at the sight of paranormal events.
  • Wild area: There are many dangerous non-human entities in the area. If the area you are exploring has small animal dens, insect nests and others, remain cautious. However, if you are in the wild, especially in the Ochiba forest, be careful about bears. If you find yourself confronting an animal, simply move slowly and leave the immediate area.
  • Train: The train line goes through the spot and people might be run over by it if not careful. Chooo Choo!
  • Toxic : The thing about toxic substances is that they are varied and diverse.
    • Air borne toxicity: It comes from colloidal liquid or solid particles, or from toxic gasses.

Colloidal dangers can go from asbestos or fiberglass being present, to mold and other bio-hazards. These can be dealt with by wearing a proper P100 mask and glasses. Asbestos or fiberglass are easy to see, and you will likely find them as part of the structure's insulates. Mold can be spotted in dark moist places too.

However, these masks do not protect you from gasses. However, that does not mean you can detect them and evade them, the most common of these are the following, Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide and Hydrogen Sulfide. They are all non breathable, with the most common one being Hydrogen Sulfide, commonly found in the sewers. You will notice it by the characteristic scent of rotten eggs and pools over the floor. Once you notice that scent, leave. If you have not left the area yet but the smell is gone, you should quicken your pace and leave.

Place preservation
Blackbar.png
Keep the place clean and don't destroy any furniture unless it is strictly necessary, you must leave the place same way you found it. This mentality of preserving the places is what keeps the Urban exploration in Karakura so open. Internationally, places of interest are kept secret due to people being uncaring and laying waste to interesting places, which had seen the growth of friendships of explorers who came in for a fun time. You do not want that gone.

That does not meant you can't spray on walls or move furniture slightly, but outright griefing is not condoned by any proffessional.
