Describe your activity on the server: I'm active on the SRP for several hours every day. While how many hours exactly can change due to my workload, I have a fairly flexible schedule so I can allocate my time to be available for specific events or meetings, et cetera. Furthermore, I am chronically a night owl so I am able to make myself available for both European and American times depending on need.

What position are you applying for?: Lawyer
What is your motivation for applying?:
OOC: My motivation to become a lawyer has not changed since the time of my last application: I wish to explore a new facet of SRP, interact with new people, and learn more about the legal system. However, such an explanation is generic and will likely describe every other applicant as well as myself.
Personally, I have participated in several factions over my two years on SRP, those being faculty, sports, and EMS. Despite their differences, I found myself enjoying the same aspect of all three: conflict. Whether it be classroom debates or a city-wide medical crisis, I have found myself enjoying high-stakes scenarios that force me to think on my feet and develop my character. From the town hall court cases I have witnessed, the work of a lawyer fits within this same category.
Furthermore, I have been involved in RP far longer than I have been on SRP (over half my lifetime at this point...) This is to say that I have been writing DetailRP (or "literate-style" posting as it is called on forums) for a decade now with my recent average word count ranging from 300 to 800+ words a post. It is a passion I have engaged in since elementary school. Through the government faction, I hope to meet others who share my interest in
IC: Chiara's core motivation is adventure, yes, but also equity. She is a Karakuran native with both pride for and resentment towards the island. She knows intimately how poorly Karakura functions and yet has the care towards it within her as to believe in its restoration. Such a belief, as much as she would rather think otherwise, implicates her involvement in the solution.
Her time working as a doctor had an immense impact on how she views Karakura's justice system. Having suffered from a major injury to the voice box as a child, her older childhood was very often spent in and around the hospital. Her curiosity towards medicine grew through proximity, eventually leading her into a medical undergraduate program and a residency specializing in Internal Medicine. Eventually, as the only member of her family capable of supporting her parents, she transferred from her residency in Tokyo to Karakura Hospital's training program. However, what she experienced on arrival did not align with the expectations of the institution she had idolized growing up.
Corruption was the primary concern. Those who held power could not be trusted to use it wisely and, hence, the systems were failing. She could not do anything regarding this in her current position but sitting and waiting? She would rather give up entirely. Her pivot into law school would help her right the wrongs that became evident through her medical career. She was well-suited as a lawyer: loud, certain in her own beliefs, loyal to those she supported, and quick to react— all traits that got her in trouble as a doctor.

Do you have an understanding of Karakura’s laws & Constitutional rights?: I am. I have read all relevant documents and intend to reread them regularly as I understand they are subject to change. I will reference this knowledge as necessary in court.
What are your goals for being in Government Faction?: I believe a well-functioning government and court system is one of SRP's best features. Checks and balances between civilian and government power are paramount in ensuring scenarios remain fun and interesting for both sides. Hence, as a lawyer, my primary goal would be to provide an interesting, realistic, and enjoyable experience my clients as well as other players with whom I interact. I would accomplish this by remaining active, going out of my way to interact with new players, and working as a team member within the faction to provide court experiences and better the system for the future. Through my participation in the Government Faction, I would ideally like to leave the civilian experience better than when I began.
In your own words, describe the different roles of the Government Faction:
Governor | Typically, the governor is the overall leader of a region. They enter office via popular vote conducted in the region in which they wish to lead. In Karakura, much like other government officials, they are determined by a vote on the mainland. They have a variety of responsibilities including making official decisions, distributing ID cards, officiating marriages, approving adoption paperwork, conducting public surveys, and inspecting shops. |
Lawyer | In court, lawyers are in charge of representing the plaintiff and the defendant, creating arguments for both sides. Once both points have been explicated and witnesses have been called cross-examination occurs before the judge makes the final call. The responsibilities of lawyers include attending trials, attorney calls, client meetings, filing restraining orders, and working at the front desk. |
Judge | The judge is the authority in court. They are in charge of directing court procedures, determining the validity of evidence, and making the final decision for cases. Furthermore, outside of court, judges are also responsible for officiating marriage. A judge is necessary for a Karakuran marriage to be seen as legal. Restraining orders are another important facet of a judge’s role. They are imperative to the safety of civilians, granting them legal protection from those who have harmed them. Aside from these responsibilities, judges can also approve adoption paperwork. They can often be found at the front desk as to make them accessible to the public when needed. |

IN CHARACTER SECTION
Full name:
The woman sat squarely in front of the interviewer. Her expression showed no signs of uncertainty. It was not her first-ever job interview; one that, in hindsight, she considered a sputtering disaster of a hot mess. Never again. She was a professional, an artisan. Job interviews were her craft. She smoothed her hair, flicking a few maroon strands out of her face as to make eye contact with the interviewer. The corners of her mouth pulled upwards into a practiced smile of sorts. "My apologies if I am late," She began. Chiara had not bothered, realistically, to check the time upon entering. It could be that she was late or early but she was allowed inside either way which she took as a positive sign. "Chiara Matsuno. It's a pleasure." She extended a polite hand to shake. Her lack of verbal flourish was a purposeful effort. She understood her own tendency to speak in excess and, therefore, corrected (perhaps too severely) in the opposite direction.

"Your royal highness is preferred, personally," she deadpanned, "Your majesty, if you must." Her lips quirked, the first hint of a chuckle escaping through the cracks. She paused. Brown eyes scanned the interviewers expression as to judge their reaction. "I'm not the Queen of England, surprisingly enough," Chiara allowed herself to laugh at her own bit. "Ms. will do fine. I don't particularly care, though." Her eye twitched ever so slightly. "Do I seem married, though? I'm curious why those were the first two you thought of..." Chiara trailed off, setting an elbow on the table and resting her chin in her hand comfortably. Her gaze fell upon the interviewer expectantly. The question was not rhetorical.
Current age:
It would be quite easy to produce another lie... for her own entertainment's sake, naturally. However, the former doctor decided against it. The government likely valued honesty, rigor, perhaps seriousness as well. Unfortunately, with time, Chiara was growing to dislike the correct answer. A sigh escaped her lips. "30 years old," she answered simply. "31 in December." She let the interviewer breathe rather than questioning them on that as well. Curiosity was a positive trait in law, correct? Chiara hoped so. The ship had sailed on a polished first impression. There was at least the opportunity for a memorable one.
Date of birth:
"December 20th," Chiara responded simply. There wasn't much more to add given what she had disclosed prior. They could calculate her birth year in their head if they so desired. "I'm a Saggittarius. If you're into spirituality, that is," she added on in monotone. The former doctor had little positive to say for spirituality, preferring tested, scientific methods. She had grown to accept the practices of Shintoism through her later 20s but the jury was still out on astrology. It was better that she stop speaking entirely rather than risk embarking on an expletive-filled tangent during a job interview. "I digress."
Academic Background:
Right. This would take a minute. Chiara inhaled deeply. "Well, for starters, I got my undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine from Tokyo University," she started, "Then, of course, was my medical residency for three years. JR Tokyo General Hospital in Internal Medicine." It wasn't exactly a part of her academic background nor her work experience. However, she considered it important to include. It was easier, for her purposes, to go chronologically. "Then I worked for a year or so as a doctor, right? Yes..." She trailed off. Her background experience was not, per se, typical, but hopefully that was to her advantage rather than a problem. "Most recently, I graduated from Sophia University with a Juris Doctor and took the bar exam last spring. Questions?" Chiara caught her breath as she waited.
[ A note: Unlike other countries, Japan does not require a pre-professional bachelor's degree in order to enter graduate law school. Applicants with STEM backgrounds, including medicine, are often accepted as a medical degree counts towards the four-year undergraduate degree requirement. ]
Work experience:
Chiara grimaced slightly at the question, hopefully not enough to be picked up on. She straightened her posture, an attempt at regaining the confidence to answer what she believed would be the hardest question of the entire interview not because of content but because of the tact required— tact that Chiara was not known for. "I was at Karakura Hospital for 6 or so months." She offered the interviewer a tight-lipped smile. It would be lovely if her answer could end there. However, for her own sake, more explanation was required. She resumed, "I became a doctor because I care about providing for the community." A true statement and one she could be proud of. "It is because of that same principal I chose to go back to school for law. So I can improve my ability to help others." She nodded in affirmation of her own statement.
Nationality & born location:
Her expression brightened at the question— it was both easy and could be spun in her favor. "Japanese," Her answer came immediately. "I was born in Karakura, actually, so I know how things work around here." Chiara glanced at the interviewer with a genuine smile. "Local laws, political climate, et cetera..." She trailed off. Her opinion of Karakuran authorities was mixed at best but even she knew better than to badmouth the government to their faces. It wasn't as if she thought the criminals were better.
Criminal record:
She shook her head. "I'm not a criminal." The statement was simple and true. The record held by KPD would back her up on that. She did not engage in gratuitous violence, affiliate with criminal organizations, or routinely participate in activities forbidden by Karakuran law. Sure there were a few... lapses in judgement... on her part. Everyone had those, right? Chiara believed so. There was a difference between an honest mistake and active participation in the harming of others. It did not impair her ability to argue for the righteousness of others but rather granted her a much-needed sense of empathy to their perspectives.
What makes you a good candidate for this job?:
"Ah, the million dollar question," Chiara spoke as to fill the silence while she thought of a better answer. She ran a hand through her hair. "I'll define a good lawyer as one who is capable of defending their clients successfully," she started, taking a logical approach. "A lawyer who is able to defend their clients well must be both thorough, as to form a proper rebuttal, and improvisational, as to provide a proper oral argument in response to a judge." She offered the interviewer a smile. "Feel free to go over my answers but I demonstrated both qualities through this interview." The hint of a self-satisfied smirk crossed her features. "Is that all?"
