Earlier today, while browsing through the Blockbench discord server for inspiration, I was reminded of some of the oldest models on SRP, and how a few of them haven’t been updated since they were first added. That's when I thought, what if I tried remaking them in a more modern style? They’ve been part of the server for over half a decade now, and even though my renditions won't be implemented in-game, I thought it’d be a nice way to practice my shading style and hopefully inspire someone else to give 3D-modelling a try :]
Now, as a little disclaimer, these models were made a LOOOONG time ago, and modelling criteria has changed a lot ever since then. While I'm not sure who made these models in the first place, considering they were around even before I joined this community, I don't intend to discredit their work, and much less call their models "ugly".
Anyways, enough yapping.
Cat Ears Headband
This was the first model I tried remaking. The main issue I saw with the original was the fact that it was too basic, not to mention it didn't use specific textures and wasn't even attached to the head properly. While making mine, I added a headband strap around the head, as well as some fluff inside the ears to add more variety to the model.
Halloween Clown Mask
This was actually the model I remembered while scrolling through Blockbench’s Discord server. I always found it a bit weird how it has scattered elements all over the place, tho I understand the original modeller wanted to create a sort of "weathered" effect. With that in mind, I tried to recreate the same effect by adding extra flat textures as a second layer, especially around the eyes and eyebrows. At first, I was going to make the mouth part hollow, but then I realized the player's face would be visible behind the mask's teeth. While it didn't necessarily look bad, I tried to remain as faithful to the original model as possible.
Flower Crown
Definitely a classic of all time. This was the very first item I bought when I joined SRP in 2019 (i think). Anyhow, I replaced the irregular arrangement of elements with flat textures for both the vines and the flowers. I will admit making the front flowers was kind of tricky, specially because I wanted to avoid using mixels as far as possible. Oh, and I also switched the flowers' color to a more red-tone hue to improve the shading quality.
When I first saw the original model, I initially thought it was a rat hat; probably because of the concept’s color choices. Either way, while recreating it, I experimented with changing the tail’s rotation and added a flat texture to give the remake a bit more flavor. Let me know what you think of the result!
A personal favourite! As you might've noticed, I changed the arrangement of the ornaments (?) on the hat so that it's clearer and more contrasting. One thing I did notice, though, is the fact that the original hat doesn't actually go ontop of the head. It's kinda just hovering over it. I assume this has to do with the fact that player heads would clip through the hat. I tried to adjuust this by making the hat's base a bit thicker.
This one was fairly simple, but that simplicity is actually what gave me the most trouble. Because the model is so small, remaking it without resorting to a higher resolution was challenging. While I could've used a 64x64 UV map, I wanted to keep the model as close to the original concept as possible. I also adjusted the design so the tiara wraps around the front of the head instead of just sitting on top of it.
Finally comes the headband! This modeel was the only one that had a custom texture instead of using default Minecraft blocks to paint them. However, it does use mixelling, and that's something I'd like to avoid as far as possible. At first, I tried to use flat elements to make the headband. However, I soon realized that the second layer of the player's head conflicted with it. Thankfully, all I had to do was bump up the model's thickness to 1.0. As for the yen symbol, the closest I could get to it without mixelling was the symbol below. Let me know how it turned out!
When I first looked at this model, I was honestly a bit confused about how the shading even worked. The shape itself was also pretty outdated, to put it lightly, so I decided to freestyle the geometry and add a small badge to the front of the hat. I’m especially proud of how this one turned out!
When I first saw this model, I was a bit concerned about the topology and the transition between 3D elements and flat textures. While working on it, I thought it would be pretty cool if wearing a scuba mask granted extra respiration time. If anyone wants to make a suggestion, feel free to use this idea :]
One of my personal favourites! Though I must say that when first checking the original model, the UV map was... certainly something. Regardless, when remaking it I added a few more spikes on the back of the head to spice it up a lil'.
Honestly, at first I thought this model would be one of the hardest, considering just how much is going on. However, it actually didn't take me that long to finish it, mostly because parts of the model are hidden and not visible.
I'm very public about my hatred towards helmets and pretty much any model that wraps around the player's head. Having to take into account the player's hair is quite annoying when modelling. Not my proudest creation, but at least it's shaded!
Viking Helmet
Helmet 2: Electric Bogaloo. Now, to be fair, this one wasn't as tricky as the previous one, specially thanks to the horns on the sides, which makes the helmet not look as bland. Making the eye holes align with the player's eyes was kinda difficult though.
Next up is the Kirby Backpack! I remember making a kirby plushie at some point in the past (it wasn't really shaded, so I might eventually get to remaking that one too). The main change I wanted to add was changing its round shape to a cube, just like how Smash Ultimate did it. Also, I intentionally opened kirby's mouth to avoid having to deeal with weird pixels. I like to think he's slightly happier now that he's a cube instead of a ball.
I have a bit of a story with these glasses... The very first time my character was stabbed with valid KPS, it was by the hands of someone that wore these glasses. Jokes aside, I do remember a lot of the GangRP community wearing this before moving on to the horned hat. Regardless of any deeper meanings, I made the glasses rely on a flat texture instead of the geometry used in the original one. I also considered adding a shine to the actual lenses, but I feel like it would remove their sass.
Yet another backpack! When I first opened the original model in Blockbench, I got kinda creeped out by Totoro's soulless eyes... Really, was it always that way? Anyway, I made a few changes here and there to match the theme of the character and make the model feel less bland.
I decided to knock out a simple one for the fun of it. There isn't much to say here, other than the fact that the original model had Z-Fighting caused by element translucidity issues. In the new one, I made sure that part would be fixed, and actually cover up the entire eye.
Let's address the elephant in the room. Am I the only one who can't find the phoenix in the original model? I'm guessing that it used a scaled-down hi-res picture to create the texture in a "pixel art" style (I advise against doing this, as it'll just cause a lot of texture noise), but I genuinely can't tell where the phoenix is. In the new version, I decided to completely remake the design, add a little handle to the umbrella and slightly reduce the resolution. Let me know how it went!
First of the many foods we'll cover! Can't say much about this one, other than the fact that the chocolate layer had to be made bigger for the sake of pixel consistence. I also decided to add a few dots ontop of the waffle to make it look more like a real-life one.
A personal favourite honestly. Even in the old version, it uses a pretty optimized geometry, albeit with vanilla textures. I will say that I found it tricky to texture the scoops of ice cream. Thankfully, I think dithering was a step in the right direction. Additionally, I threw in some melted ice cream running down the cone for extra flavour!
Okay... When I started making the model, I didn't realize its claws were black. However, I feel like the new version has a more simplistic style and a hue that's kind of easier to look at. The original one leaned more towards orange, which is accurate when compared to real-life crabs. Also, I didn't want to remake the texture from scratch... Anyhow, do let me know if you have any feedback for this!
I will admit I'm not that proud of this one, specially due to the few amount of pixels I have to work with (as well as the fact that I hate using yellow for textures). Aside from that, I made sure that the inside part of the shell had a different, darker texture face so it wouldn't blend in with its opposite side.
Okay. Hear me out. The original one used oak planks to simulate breading, which I understand given the limitations back then. However, oak planks doesn't have the most appetizing look, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who agrees. If someone asks, just say that you toasted the buns with some butter.
This is kind of the same. Instead of using sandstone for the buns, I used a couple slices of white bread to give it that tasty look I was looking for. Kind of unrelated, but if you look at the older version, you'll notice that the "lettuce" is in fact a block of slime. God knows what kind of effects that toxic waste had in Karakura's populatiion (/j).
When making this, I considered removing the brown parts to make it look smoother. However, considering I'd already made multiple banana models in the past, I wanted to keep this distinct look. Do let me know how it turned out! ^^
This is perhaps the easiest model to remake of this list. It's just a single element with reusable UV faces. Not much to say about this one, really.
When remaking this model, I went to look at some real-life lamb danburi. Not gonna lie, Google Images showed me like 8 different ways to cook Lamb Danburi, so I went ahead and modelled what looked best with the main ingredients I found.
Pretty simple model to remake, really. I did, however, make the dango balls slightly spherical by using second layers. This way, I hoped to make the geometry a bit more interesting than three cubes and a long rectangle.
Not gonna lie, in this case I wouldn't blame anyone thinking that the original one looked better. I even had a look at the Blockbench Discord Server to look for references to aid me. Unfortunately, by keeping things as close to vanilla as possible, it just isn't possible to replicate the original shape without mixelling.
Not much to say here, just a voxellized pocky stick turned into a model with 3 elements.
I never understood if this was an alcoholic drink or not. Back then, you could eat this item (including the shell), so I never really knew if I could carry this on my High School character. Anyhow, I changed up some things such as the straw position or the umbrella's shape to make things look more pleasing to look at.
Overtime, I'll try to remake other old models in the newer style, but do let me know if you have any feedback relating to the models I've made so far! I haven't modelled in a fair bit, so I wanna make sure I'm caught up to the current modelling style ^^
