Backstory:

Amara and Ivy were born in Busan, South Korea to Haru and Yujin Yatogami. Their father was Japanese and their mother, Korean. Yujin owned a beauty salon, and was skilled at doing customers’ hair and makeup. Haru had an awful gambling problem and had been out of work for months. One day, when Amara (15) and Ivy (12) were at school, a loan shark of Haru’s came by the house looking for him. Instead, they found Yujin home alone, and killed her. When Haru came home and saw the scene, he knew exactly what had happened. He never thought that his gambling problems would put his family in danger… but here they were. Immediately, he packed the girls’ bags, picked them up from school, and fled the country. To where? Haru’s hometown: Kyoto, Japan.
Haru never explained to his daughters what had happened to Yujin. They knew she was gone, but had no idea it was their father’s fault. With no closure, the girls tried to move on and focus on their new school. It wasn’t too hard for them to transition to life in Japan. Growing up they had always spoken Korean to their mother, and Japanese to their father. But even in Japan, when it was just Amara and Ivy together, they still spoke Korean. It felt safe, as it reminded them of their mother.
One day, Amara was not feeling too well at school, so she left to go home early. She was quiet as she entered the apartment, as she did not feel like explaining to her father why she wasn’t at school. As she tip-toed by his room, she heard him on the phone. Haru was speaking to someone - about a debt he had not repaid. Amara was just about to ignore him and go to her room when she heard the voice from the phone say, “Do you want the same fate of Yujin to fall on your daughters? You know my rules. Pay me soon or you’ll have no one.” Amara’s breath caught in her throat. Was Haru the reason her mother died? No - the reason her mother was killed? She felt the weight of the world fall on her chest and she couldn’t breathe. She ran to her room with tears in her eyes, still quiet enough to not startle Haru. She grabbed her duffle bag and threw a few of her and Ivy’s clothes in. Looking at their dresser, she saw the photo of her mom standing with her and Ivy at Jeju Island. She snatched the photo off the dresser, took the stash of money she had under her bed and sprinted out the door.
She waited for Ivy outside the school gates until the bell rang. When she saw her sister, the tears started falling all over again. Amara grabbed Ivy’s hand and led her around the corner to an ally. She explained everything she had heard from Haru’s phone call to Ivy and they connected the dots. Amara knew how unsafe it was for them to stay with their father. He didn’t care for them - he never did. If he did he would have never put his family in danger in the first place and Yujin would still be alive. Ivy nodded her head slowly, took the duffle from Amara’s shoulder and said two words… “Let’s go.” They walked to the train station silently, and when they got there, purchased two one-way tickets to the farthest destination: Karakura.
