What are your thoughts on SRP Skins?

Question, why are alot of srp skins and general tailoring that's so common in the server so desaturated and...yellow? I cannot be the only one to notice this, not to mention the lack of visible eyes?

Awhile ago from my own experience, I had gotten a tailor commission for one of my most colorful characters!!
And even after I got it, it was desaturated and I ended up turning the saturation up/editing the colors to get them how I wanted it.
Even when I gave the tailor a proper reference sheet to color pick from it, it had been so dull... but even with that, I still payed and appreciated the work they put in!
But its still... how do you explain it, disheartening?

I want to see more visible color in characters in srp, not the same copy and paste yellow-toned character?
And yes, i know someone is probably gonna see this and say "Just make your own skins then if its that big of an issue" and yes I could do that, but what about those who have vibrant characters and are looking to pay someone to bring them to life as a skin?

I wanna hear your thoughts!!

the downfall of schoolrp tailoring must be studied.

the colours used to pop out and look genuinely great, but ~2 years ago, the style began to slowly become oversimplified to the point where people are using basically 2 squares and desaturated colours.... its honestly sad to see the old style be thrown into the trash.. :/

i truly admire people who are somewhat trying to bring back the old style, such as @TheEz8Fury and @fourmis2020 , AND ESPECIALLY TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THEIR OWN SHADING STYLE!!! BE CREATIVE!

i am the #1 bright colorful shading advocate RAAHHH!!!!!

to comment further; even from the beginning stages of SRP's beautiful more legacy shade-intensive styles, i've always been an advocate for bringing my visions to life by my own hands. I have NEVER EVER let anyone touch any of my characters with a traditional style, and i think it's paid off into creating skins that i've managed to not only make very visually appealing and completely individualized, but to grow my skill, and have my own visions completely manifest how i want. I'd love more people to have the courage to stray off from the typical 'style' of the server - i know it was dismissed as a point, but it absolutely pays off to dedicate yourself to your vision creatively

anyway i do colorful skins hmu

Okay, as a tailor. Seeing the fact that somebody has said "the downfall of tailoring must be studied" that was not at all right to say, because. People work HARD on their skins, and that's pretty much bringing what they have made and pretty much saying it's not that good? Yes, they might have said they admired what they do afterwards, but it still wasn't ok.

People actually prefer the more bright colorful shading, but if they do not. They can bring the saturation down themselves.. it's not the difficult. I PERSONALLY love the bright and colorful shadings

agreed, it hurts my eyes to see them have none, it's so difficult trying to better the way I make my palettes when everything is so orange/yellow, everywhere I look it's the same thing. I mourn 2023 shading everyday, they were all such beautifully done and intricate :(, the colors, shading, and even shaping were at their upmost peak, theeennnn we all fell victim to a never-ending trend of simplicity that only worsens every day. I get it's minecraft, but everything I see now looks so, flat? I miss being able to tell characters apart

I do not like modern SRP shading. This is not a diss toward anyone on SRP who uses it, as everyone has what they likes, but I (PERSONALLY) really don't think they're good at all. Sometimes, it's hard to tell what a person is even SUPPOSED to be wearing when I'm looking at a skin. Or a character who wears white is wearing something extremely orange. It's hard to say any effort is put into shading these sometimes considering most of the shading is one big rectangle overlay layer. Just my opinion. I could go on, and on, and on about it if you really asked me to. Especially as someone who does art commissions, it's almost impossible to gauge any true character details because I can't tell that your character is meant to be deathly pale when they look disgustingly orange.

Bring back old shading, that's my input.
For the record, I am not saying this to personally attack anyone. Like I said, everyone has what they likes. Do whatever you want, we're all entitled to an opinion. :) As long as nobody is being personally attacked, this is merely just discussion.

I don't like where skins are going either, even as a tailor that does current shading, I lowk hate it! I do not like how it looks in any light, and most people who do explore into different styles either get people constantly ordering from them, or there are no orders at all. A lot of shading is also different now from eachother, I will admit that, often times they clash against eachother; but the colours barely change from skin to skin or pallete to pallete.

I will say, as more people join the tailoring pool, of course the shading style is going to change as times change, and saying the same thing somebody said before;
"we all fell victim to a never-ending trend of simplicity that only worsens every day."
Why is SRP becoming a beige server with characters?

I even have my own experiences where I once ordered a skin; bright colours in the refs to only be dulled down to a grayed out version. It is awful nowadays trying to find an open tailor that does brighter colours, I have been trying for months, they either never open or everybody orders instantly and their queue fills quickly.

i think i like the current style but honestly i've been thinking of getting an adult character in the older shading style because i think it makes them look more rough. the new soft shading i think is cute for younger characters but older characters def benefit off of the old shading style.

i have mixed opinions on it. while i do agree that yellow/orangey skin tones are more common with current shading, there are still plenty of tailors who use other tones for their skins. it's just a matter of finding the right person whose style resonates with you.

some people might say they prefer the 'simplicity' of it, while others might say they prefer more complex &/or detailed shading. same way some prefer dull/desaturated colors over colorful/vibrant colors. it quite literally just comes down to preference. i don't think anyone should be told to change their style simply because it might not be what some people (like yourself, for example) enjoy.

tl;dr: don't like it? keep looking for a tailor whose shading will satisfy you. there's many tailoring servers; you're bound to find someone who can bring your character to life in the way you envisioned. :]

I've transitioned from being a hater, to a lover; to realizing that it doesn't matter. People like what they like, and I find myself making more money if I go towards the newer shading. Depending on preferences, I'll make my skins more detailed for some clients than others! Versatility is the strongest thing you can have, and I love the colors certain creators like 3Donk, Wkiii, and Maeskerz do. Shaping has become SO important as well! I think it's rude to diss on what people like so harshly, and I don't think there has been a 'downfall'. Maybe I just have a WE'RE ALLL IN THIS TOOOGETHER feel to it, but seeing so many people come together to look similar for our little world is amazing. Not everyone has to do it, I don't have to do it, neither do you! But sometimes, it's nice to see everyone unique yet undeniably connected.

Honestly, I don't think the real issue here is desaturated versus saturated colors. Out of pure curiousity I scoped out a few of the 'old shading' tailors, and those of you who abide by 'old shading', and compared the palettes.

1784784258975.png
Both new palettes are palettes created by myself, whilst the "old" palette has been color picked off someone's skin. From a standpoint solely based in color theory the "New" palette is objectively more saturated, an observation reflected both by your eye and the numerical values in color wheel (I say this as an artist who has gone to school for art heh) NOT TO SOUND LIKE A NERD!!! That being said, I don't think the issue lies in newer skins/tailoring being desaturated. I think its just people applying pressure on themselves to need to conform to what the masses are abiding to. This server has a weird habit of manufacturing a general 'consensus' of what things should and shouldn't be like, hence why certain trends catch on and fall off throughout the years. I've seen a handful of tailors that still do old shading who don't get much traction because of the way people feel like they have to 'fit in'. If you like the older style of shading, seek it out. I've also noticed that in the event someone DOES do something unique to them/their style, it is quickly stolen, tweaked, or adopted by other tailors, which is unfortunately inevitable. LONG STORY SHORT. . . The alleged "Downfall of tailoring" boils down to a minority that isn't fond of the current trends of tailoring. WHICH IS COMPLETELY FINE! Something doesn't have to be everyone's cup of tea. Though I don't think any trend, especially when its someone's art and creativity should be referred to as a downfall, eyesore, or 'not good at all.' I just think people should be allowed to wear whatever without judgement, that goes for all skins. Whether it be a namemc skin, 'old shading', or the 'newer style'. PERSONAALLY i think everyone should push themselves a wee bit harder to think out the box when it comes to shading and colors and shapes. Why're we sticking to a specific regime anyway!?

TLDR: If you want to bring back old shading learn how to tailor and jus do it and dont let any1 stop u.

ok. thats it. bai.

I highly support ur opinion and agree with it alongside my own >_<! love u wookie

imo. newer shading, there isnt as much of a consistency in hue shifting. nor do people understand how it helps to bring realism to your tailoring. i very much prefer older shading, but ive learned to grasp the concept of new shading, as long as i dont look like the annoying orange.

To put it simply it's not really my style, even if I can appreciate the aesthetic look of it
The only thing I do not like is the way eyes are being shaded but again it only really concerns my characters and how I want them to be represented

A friend of mine introduced me to a specific tailor that fits my needs of what I want from a skin and ever since then I've always come to them whenever I need a new base
In a sense it has that blend of modern shading, but the palette fits more to what I want for my characters, and I find myself enjoying roleplaying more because of it <3

I'd like to add my two-cents in this! My shading style I'd consider to be leaning towards heavy shading with elements of the modern shading. i'll be using examples of my old shading style over the years as my points of comparisons as I don't got no right to ****yze someone else's artwork or skins. :D it's rude to do that unprompted guys
1784810588629.pngIn this shading you can tell that the main focus is right ahead, the source of light being front of the character rather than what's happening currently, with that happening it made the sides of the skins or the inner corner of the limbs darker, during that time ~3/4 years ago, that style of shading was prominent, often in different intensities, some had more intense shading for these inner parts and some were like me, a lot less intense. The general idea was there however, emphasis on the creases WAS often by simply moving the LIGHTNESS lower ! Which creates a darker look without really changing the hue as the current modern shading does!

1784810907796.png

Second example is my baby Shiharu
1784810953124.pngIN THIS SHADING you can tell where the light source is coming from! It's coming from the side, which is something most if not all modern skin / semi-modern skin shading has! This style is a lot more blend of the harsher shading with a focus on details, and the softer coloring style that you can find in the modern shading. In addition to the light source, in this shading the HUE is actually used and moved. So, in teh modern shading, a lot of people tend to be more creative with their colors by using these two meters.

Base color;
1784811088502.png

Darkest shade;
1784811109049.png

This is something that makes the new modern shading a lot more different. The usage of stauration and hues !! Non of my skins have that 'orange/yellow' leaning shading style due to the fact it is not something i really enjoy so this is the closest thing i got.

It's improtant to note that in many modern shaded skins people also add HIGHLIGHTS!! Which highlights even more of the light source and adds a lot of PIZZAZ to the skin!!

In this light you can see that the main thing driving the new modern shading is teh use of saturation and hue, and how. Modern shading often does not have as many details as this skin here does, opting for simplicity in driving home the basic lights and shadows, what makes it unique is how the colors are picked, which i personally find to be VERY charming

1784811314150.pngON THE OTHER END; is this bad boy. A heavy, harsh shading style that uses the lightness meter. Even here, you can still see the highlights and the use of the hue and saturation meters which is inspired by the new modern shading. Here, a lot more details are placed on the creases of the skin, more prominant locations of the wrist, elbow, armpit area, ankle, knee, and what have you!!

Base color;
1784811411181.png

Darkest shade;

1784811435734.png

highlight;
1784811449912.png

All these three main colors have different hues and saturations, and unlike shiharu, this one has a lot more different between the lightness of the base color and the darkest shade!!

ALL THIS TO SAAAY;

That the modern shading's uniqueness is derived from the positioning (and where the attention is chosen) and the saturation. I'd argue the use of intense bright colors adds flavor!! meanwhile the harsher shading (my own style atleast) has a lot more on the details & lightness.

Essentially, like many summerized up, it's a matter of prefersence. I use shiharu with a lighter shading!! he's a soft character, whilst Alistor is meant to be very grunge and harsh!!

The dullness you describe could be due to the emphasis being moved away from the hue. Choosing colors that are generally very similar ends up muting everything together! This isn’t like a bad thing really, to fix this you only have to tune your colors out and add different hues and allow there to be a difference in values. Its color theory territory and this is just a hypothesis!

For me a skin of mine felt dull so I just asked the tailor to tune up the colors a little (tbh I had a darker skin char so doesn’t apply as much since no yellow or orange ) oops

I see why it’s very appealing as a trend of skin shading!

Soooo why could it feel dull?? In short?? The values are likely very close to one another! AKA if you turn in grayscale it all looks the same. I’m no color theory except so I don’t know how to fix that up beyond my initial hypothesis aha

ITS NOY DOWNFALL!! PEOPLE ARE LEARNING DIFFETENT THINGS!!!!

even if those skins aren’t my style BUT IT DOESNT MEAAAN THRY ARE BADDD!! THEY RE VERY GOOD AND I ADORE HOW THEY PICK COLORS

ok this is my two cetns <3 BYEEE

Hello Hello, Just a reminder that we all need to be nice and friendly. Opinions are allowed, but making comments and digs about other peoples styles will not be tolerated. We are a community that supports eachother, if i see this go further than it should, I will lock the thread :D

i feel like what most tailors are trying to convey nowadays is this type of lighting (orange/sunset light) but in a slightly more saturated tone, which i found in many artstyles. The only reason it looks bad most of the time is because it's used in a game which is overall pretty desaturated unless you use shaders. The so called 'old skins' only followed what minecraft's default colors looked like. Before, they only used base colors for skins, now it's base colors + lighting on top. Also, the reason why the shadows look more blue-ish is because it's supposed to be the complementary colour of the light source. Add sky reflections on top, and you get that gray-ish shadow a lot of tailors use nowadays, mostly present on lighter colors or blonde hair. I feel like the image below is the art that best matches what tailors are trying to do in my opinion.
art is not mine i found it on pinterest pls dont slime me. artist is onlyjasontodd
The only times people make the lighting 'too orange' or 'too yellow' is when 1. they don't know color theory 2. they just like it that way lol
Also, some people might not be following the whole reasonings i've made to make their skins and just put those colors because they've seen someone else use it and they thought it was cute. And that's okay. at the end of the day though, it all circles back to color theory.
Either way, no shading is wrong or right. It's all based on artstyles and what the current trend is, and tailors are free to explore as many palettes and styles as they like. The statements i've made above are only critical thinking about why tailors are choosing those colors.

I'm a big believer on going with whatever shading you prefer. At the end of the day your shading(sometimes) or the colors you pick will almost never look the way they do to you as it would to someone else and that's because. . . Monitors. Not everyone is looking at the same colors. Panels like OLED, IPS, LCD all shift and contrast colors in different ways, not even to mention that everyone's settings on their monitors can be different. Skins with the prettiest colors on one screen might look horrid to some on another. So always do what looks better to you not what looks better for someone else, your writing and the quality of your roleplay is not decided based on what your skin looks like <3
