What position are you applying for (Maiden or Priest)?
Maiden

What is your motivation for applying?
During the time I’ve been playing on SRP, I’ve been involved in many factions! A good few times, I’ve returned to see how much each has changed, experience the changes, and even to meet more people! Since I’ve been in the shrine faction last, I know a LOT has been changed; the entire monastery and new items, for example. Unfortunately, due to personal issues, I had to leave the shrine due to inactivity. I wanted to give other people a chance at being a shrine staff because I had already been within the faction for exactly a year, and I was becoming way too inactive and unmotivated to even get on my accounts for quite some time.

This time, I hope to return with a completely new slate with a character whom I’ve hardly used just yet. Even while out of the faction, I’ve always been fascinated with the shrine, trying to find a reason, a huge motivation for my return. Of course, I’m always more than happy to meet new people and make new friends, but I want to create new experiences for myself and for others who maybe haven’t had the chance to really roleplay at the shrine. I know for a fact that I can make a memorable experience for other players, and that’s something I genuinely want to continue doing by returning to the shrine faction.

What do you currently know about Shintoism? Are you willing to learn more about it?
I don’t remember too much from when I was last in the shrine faction, but I have done a lot of research. While I’ve done just a little bit of research, I plan on looking into the religion further and getting help from others in order to learn more about Shintoism than I currently do.

TYPES OF SHINTO
(This will be brief explanations of each)
- Shrine (Jinja) Shinto
- Sect (Kyōha) Shinto
- Folk (Minzoku) Shinto

SHRINE SHINTO
Shrine Shinto serves as a place to worship, where people can visit in order to pay respect to the Kami. Shrines are frequently visited during festivals, prayers for good fortune, and life events (such as weddings). Shrine Shinto is the main tradition that has started from the beginning of Japanese History, which is based on religion and state, holding close ties to the Japanese Imperial family.

SECT SHINTO
Developed in the late Edo period, it became formally established during the Meiji era. Shintoism experienced significant religious reforms, including the separation of Shinto from Buddhism. The Japanese government officially recognized and removed Sect Shinto from State Shinto. Sect Shinto is a newer movement of 13 major sects, which was organized around the 19th century, along with others that soon emerged after World War II. Each was organized by a founder or systemizer. Fun fact: State Shinto was considered a national cult.

FOLK SHINTO
Folk Shinto is centered on small roadside images and agricultural rites of rural families, lacking formal organization. This aspect of Shinto emphasises local customs, rituals/festivals, and veneration of the Kami. This is often practiced by common people without a formal organization or doctrine.

Unlike many other religions, Shinto has no original founder, at least one that has been recognized at all. However, people of Ancient Japan worshiped what are often described as divine ancestors, communicated with the spirit worlds through shamans, and held animistic beliefs.

CORE BELIEFS
KAMI
Kami are what somebody would call the ‘objects’ of worship in Shinto. They’re translated as a deity, lord, or god, but they also include forces of nature, including both good and evil. Shinto myths often refer to “800 myriads of kami” to express the infinite number of potential kami, along with the new ones that have yet to be recognized. Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess, birds, rocks, fish, beasts, and plants can all be considered kami.

PURITY AND HARMONY
In Shinto, they promote purity and harmony in life itself. It’s commonly thought that humans are good, but evil is caused by evil spirits that make them not so good. In Shintoism, the evil spirits are kept away by the Kami, who are returned the favor with prayers and offerings by the people who partake in Shintoism

TRUTH AND EMPIRICAL EXISTENCE
Kami are unable to be fully explained, though they can be understood via faith. Sinto’s core beliefs involve musubi, which is the mysterious creating and harmonizing power of kami. Makoto is revealed by kami, which is to guide people to live in accordance with it. Manifested in the empirical and transformed into infinite varieties in time is truth. To live in the kami’s will is often believed to create a ‘mystical power’ that gains the protection and cooperation of all kami.

DEITIES AND SPIRITS
Shinto is centered around the worship of kami, which are deities or spirits that inhabit natural elements and/or beings. Kami possess a mysterious power to harmonize and create. While they’re not easily defined, they can be understood through faith, with various kami recognized in a polytheistic form. In ancient Shinto, amatsukami (heavenly kami) were considered more noble than knitsukami (earthly kami), though this is less significant than modern Shinto. Kami normally manifest and reside in symbolic objects like mirrors, which are frequently worshiped in Shinto Shrines.

Some examples of Kami are:
The sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami
Animals, plants, and even rocks
Creator Spirits
Illustrious ancestors

PRACTICES

While Shintoism doesn’t have a weekly religious service, people will visit shrines on their own time and convenience. During the 1st and 5th of each month, some people will visit, along with festivals (matsuri). Some who are devoted, also known as devotees, may visit every morning. Upon arrival, visitors will walk to the basin, where they will wash their hands and mouth before making a small offering at the haiden, and then pray. Sometimes, a visitor may ask a priest to perform rites or special prayers.

FESITVALS/RITUALS

Each Shinto Shrine holds several major festivals yearly, which include the Spring and Autumn Festivals, an Annual Festival, and the Divine Procession. There’s a normal order of the rituals done at a grand festival, which is usually:

Purification rites
(harae)
Adoration
Opening of the inner sanctuary
Presentation of the food offerings
(sake, rice cakes, rice, vegetables, salt, water, fish, and seaweed. Animal meat is not included)
Prayer
(a recitation of prayers called norito)
Sacred dance and music
General offering
(symbolic offerings that use branches of the evergreen sacred tree with white paper strips - a Tamagushi)
Taking the offerings away
Shutting the door of the inner sanctuary
Final adoration
Feast
(naorai)

DEVELOPMENT
Born December 31st, 2003, right before the clock struck for the new year, was Nadezhda Schäfer. Nadezhda was born in Zhelenogorsk, a small town within Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, where she grew up as an only child, spoiled with love and support from her parents, Alisa Ivankova-Schäfer and Alexander Schäfer. While she grew up, Nadezhda had lived a comfortable and fulfilling life, keeping good grades in school, surrounding herself with many people she considered friends, some becoming closer to be considered family in her eyes.

Soon enough, Nadezhda grew up, invested in getting herself out into the world, wanting to explore, and be free from something that held her down at home. Her parents. While they were supportive, caring, and kind, upon many other things, they were also sick and needed somebody to look after them. Even though Nadezhda yearned so badly to go out and live her life, she still stayed back in order to take care of her family first. To her? That’s all she wanted to do at the moment; greater opportunities could wait.

December 31st, 2019, it was Nadezhda’s 16th birthday! All of her friends, family, peers, everybody was over at her house for a surprise party. Of course, she had received many gifts, ranging from new clothes or even makeup that she begged for over and over. Nearing the end of the party, Nadezhda had been called out to the back of the house, told there was one last surprise for her. Waiting for her arrival, a brand new motorcycle was waiting outside under a tarp just for her. Nadezhda’s parents had slowly become better, and they ended up getting her exactly what she dreamt of, for many years, even working herself to the brink of exhaustion to show how much she wanted a gift like this.

Immediately after the party, her parents had allowed Nadezhda to take a test drive at night, where she could spend up to two hours exploring wherever she wanted, and expected her to come home within that two-hour mark of freedom. Unfortunately, Nadezhda never made it home that night, nor was she going to be the same person after the accident.

UNFORTUNATE CIRCUMSTANCES
Everything was going well for the first hour and a half of driving around, exploring, and going out of her comfort zone to have the best time of her life so far. Upon seeing the time and how much she had left, Nadezhda started to make her way home, enjoying the rest of her night before everything suddenly went black, her ears ringing, and her body engulfed in a state of motionless lying. This only lasted for what felt like ten minutes, but in reality, several hours had passed before she finally woke up in the hospital, still unable to see, hardly able to hear, as she was suffering from two ruptured eardrums, damage to her optic nerve, along several other broken bones.

Unlucky for Nadezhda, she was unrecognizable, unable to speak or hear, and even unable to see. Without any form of ID on her, the woman was sitting in a hospital bed, surrounded by doctors instead of her friends and family. Luckily, they didn’t have to see her in the hospital, bruised and broken, almost beyond repair. All she could do was lie down, praying, waiting to get better, so she could go back to living her life, just so she could go back home and hug her family once again. What did she do to deserve something so bad to happen to her, especially something so unfortunate, so deadly? That’s all she thought about while forcing herself to sleep through the pain.

Days had passed since she had been hospitalized, and still nobody had shown up for her, causing her to be completely alone. Well, that’s what she thought until new footsteps were felt entering the hospital room, though they still seemed somewhat familiar. A hand was gently placed on the top of her head, running down the back of her hair in a motherly, comforting manner. No voices were heard, yet she didn’t feel so alone anymore; it almost felt like her parents were with her, specifically her mother. For the next few weeks, the same hand gesture, that same person kept returning, assuring Nadezhda that it would be alright, and that her mother was most definitely there now.

THIS IS HOME?
After weeks that felt like decades, Nadezhda was finally able to return to her normal life! Or so she thought. While she was at home, her hearing never got much better, and her eyesight never seemed to make a return. In the girl’s world, it felt like everything had tilted, hitting her with a terrible 180 twist in her social and family life. While still recuperating from her injuries, the family that surrounded Nadezhda was quick to help her with anything she needed, being by her side at all times, or when they were called out to. Trying to find her way without sight or sound, which caused her to do silly things, such as stub her toe on a door frame or run into a wall. But it was all okay because she was home now, safe, loved, and cared for by her family. Soon, everything started to fall in place, making the woman comfortable while she continued to heal for the next couple of months.

Just over three months had passed, and it was now April 19th, 2020. Her injuries were finally almost completely healed, and her life was starting to slowly return to the way it was before this terrible accident. She stopped attending school, spending time with the friends she once had, and even stopped going outside as a whole. Many would think it’s because she was riddled with both mental and physical scars from the accident, but that wasn’t the reason at all; it was because she was never allowed outside. Whenever she even attempted or asked to leave the house, she was always told no or stopped from leaving. Eventually, Nadezhda stopped trying to leave, even stopped asking as a whole if she could go outside if she went with another person, and that’s how it was for years.

June 26th, 2021 - 3:27 AM
Nadezhda had woken up from her sleep, sight still dark, though her ears were ringing. She moved her head to glance around, thinking that it was a normal day for her after waking up, yet as soon as she moved to sit up in bed, a creak sounded. She could hear again, but why so suddenly? For now, it was ignored, so Nadezhda had quickly fallen back asleep, assuming it was just a dream.

July 2nd, 2021 - 4:02 PM
Nadezhda was sitting in her normal rocking chair she received after the accident. She always assumed it was from a friend, something to help comfort and soothe her, so it was never something the girl questioned. However, this all flipped when her vision, though blurry, slowly started to semi-return. The house looked different, but nothing hit her quite yet.

Days continued to pass, yet she never notified her family about what had happened, just assuming that they would know by how well she was getting around the house compared to just less than a month ago. For once, she got lucky in her choice and overheard a conversation that was had right next to where she sat. It was her mother and father, yet they seemed panicked, anxious even. Why? Well, it was about Nadezhda and her condition. They seemed to be worried about whether or not she’d recover, but it wasn’t because they wanted her to see and hear again. In fact, it was quite the opposite. They were worried about those things because if they came true, she’d find out who they were, and more importantly, who they weren’t. Unfortunately for them, all of their worries came true.

March 20th, 2024 - 1:52 AM
The moon was beaming down just right, glistening while the song birds quietly chirped to one another, most asleep, while the water of the lake in the backyard ran cold with a refreshing sound, assuring nature that it wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon, as it continued to rush under the ice shielding the surface. Everything she needed was in a small backpack, the one brought home with her after leaving the hospital to go ‘home’. With blurred vision and difficulty hearing, Nadezhda had started to slowly creep her way from her room, through the halls, down the stairs, and eventually out of the house. With one big motion, she was left with no choice but to slam the door closed before dashing through the wooded area, cutting through bushes, branches, and vines in total darkness, other than the moon, which lit the path she needed to go.

Not far behind, footsteps followed, almost as quick as hers, yet not quick enough to catch up too close to her. On quite literal hopes, prayers, and a single oat bar for some energy she was forced to store, Nadezhda had continued. After what felt like days of running, which was only just over an hour and a half, she had finally collapsed, pushing herself to physical exhaustion. Footsteps quickly approached while she lay in the bushes, body lifeless, other than her chest that quickly rose and fell to quietly catch her breath. Luck was once again on her side. The footsteps of whoever was behind her had passed, and she was finally able to rest, even eat for a few moments, while regaining her energy. Right then and there, Nadezhda had fallen asleep.

ELUDE
After what felt like just five minutes of resting her eyes, the sun was suddenly beaming, lighting up the surrounding area where she had lost somebody, or even a group of people, in the woods. While being well-rested and energized once again, Nadezhda continued her journey out of the woods until she found herself at a large, busy road. Wasting no time, Nadezhda had flagged down a car, requesting them to take her back home. Upon seeing her bruised and abrased figure, they did exactly what she said, not disobeying the poor woman’s orders. As soon as the car was stopped, not even allowing them to park it first, Nadezhda had jumped out and sprinted towards the front door, knocking and ringing the bell as many times as she could. Nobody answered. After asking the driver to borrow their phone, she dialed both of her parents' numbers to no avail. They were gone, but why?

There was no time to figure anything out. As of right now, Nadezhda has no choice but to run and leave her old life, hobbies, friends, and even her family behind to keep herself safe. Without any time to waste, Nadezhda had hitchhiked her way all the way to Moscow, Russia, where she had begged for enough money to get the quickest plane ride she could, all the way to Tokyo, Japan. This was anything but cheap, raising roughly ₽43,682 to just get there. After what felt like decades, Nadezhda was finally on the plane, knowing that she would be able to get away from the life she had previously had. Though it was sad, it had to be done for her own safety.

ANDROMEDA WRIOTHESLEY
Upon her arrival to Karakura, Nadezhda hadn’t spoken a lick of Japanese, though she stumbled upon a Monastery while trying to find her way through Tokyo, attempting to search for a nice place to rest for the first time in what felt like forever. There, they gave her shelter, food, water, as well as lessons on Japanese, so she could understand them and even respond as much as she could. In return, she would help with chores around the shrine, as well as spend time with the other staff, getting to know each one better and more personally than the others might.

It was now May 20th, 2024. Now that she was healthier, better at understanding Japanese, and able to have a decent conversation in her newly learned second language, Nadezhda decided that it would be better if she had left. She feared that she might be found by the family if her stay lasted longer than Nadezhda expected it to. With a note and parting gifts, the woman was off to explore more of Japan, hoping to find a forever place to stay. This was until she stumbled upon Karakura. Quickly, she booked the next flight over and arrived in just a few hours. Yes, the city was claimed to be bad, yet it was nowhere people would think she’d go. After all, Nadezhda was a private school student who held good grades and had many friends. Yet, now she had nothing, forcing herself to rebuild who she was from scratch.

Soon enough, Nadezhda had a completely new look, which included bizarre body modifications, new accessories, clothing, and a hairstyle completely different from her previous way of fitting in as the ‘perfect daughter’ type of look. After changing her appearance, all scars were covered with makeup before she finally visited the town hall to get a new ID for herself, now under the name of Andromeda Wriothesley. Even though she was no longer Nadezhda Schäfer, she still held the love for the shrine, so Andromeda decided to apply, hoping that she would get to work somewhere that felt like home to her.

CHARACTER KNOWLEDGE / SITUATIONS

How does your character act around shrine grounds? How do they interact with guests and other staff?
Having a rather shy attitude, Andromeda will be unlikely to go out of her way to speak up, listening intently to any conversation around, and only speaking when she’s talked to. She is quiet and professional, being polite with every word she speaks, watching herself carefully every step of the way. Though this shy facade will quickly disappear once she’s comfortable and trusting of the people around.
Once Andromeda is around people she knows are ‘safe’ and trustworthy, she doesn’t hold back with her words, speaking freely, and even joking around with others nearby. Seeing this side of her could take some time, yet it’s worth the wait if you get to know her well enough to the point where she won’t stop talking or trying to make conversation with others.

You see a guest jumping around the roofs of the building and overall disrespecting shrine grounds, how would your character handle it?
FIRST WARNING
Upon seeing someone jumping and climbing the building's roof, Andromeda would approach the guest, politely asking them to get down from the building. Afterward, she would explain that it’s impolite and disrespectful to climb on anything while in monastery grounds since it’s a sacred place to the Kami.

SECOND WARNING
If Andromeda is to see the same person climbing around the buildings once again, she would still have a polite yet more stern approach when telling them that they have to get down from the building, or leave the shrine completely, since they haven’t stopped disrespecting the shrine grounds.

FURTHER ACTION

Going by a three-strike rule, this will be their last chance! Andromeda would approach the person yet again, telling them that they would have to leave the shrine. If a refusal were to be had, the KPD would be called for trespassing, and they would be blacklisted for disrespecting shrine grounds and trespassing.

Why does your character want to become a shrine maiden/priest? What do they wish to achieve?
Though she had grown up an Athiest, while she was at the other household with her fake ‘family’, Andromeda was slowly pushed further into the Christian religion, where she would attend masses, pray, and attend other activities church-related with the family.

Upon her arrival in Karakura, Andromeda didn’t know a lick of Japanese, though she had arrived at a monastery on the mainland, where they had given her a place to stay warm and rest while they collectively decided to help her learn Japanese, as well as more about Japan as a whole. While she learned more and more, Andromeda was slowly finding herself looking for books, at websites, anything she could find that was about one of the most popular religions in Japan, which was Shintoism. It was only natural for her to do so since all the time she spent was around shrine staff.

While she was exploring around Karakura upon arrival, Andromeda found herself at the shrine stairs, where she climbed until reaching the monastery itself. Once she had interacted with a few people within the shrine and throughout the town of Karakura itself, she decided that she wanted a peaceful, kind place to work. Andromeda hopes, prays that she could help someone the same way the shrine staff in the past have helped her recuperate and get back on her feet after what she’d been through, giving her an entirely new life.

What are the core values of your character?
Justice, Patience, Peace, and Family.

FAMILY
In Adromeda’s point of view, Family is her biggest, most important core value. To her, family isn’t just people who you’re related to, it’s a person or group of people you’re able to trust, love, value, and where your loyalties will lie, where they’ll do the same right back. These people that Andromeda sees as family are people who uphold the idea of similar ethical and moral principles that she had while growing up. In the end, people whom she considers family are individuals who will affect how she acts, guiding her behavior and decision-making.

PEACE
Maybe I lied when saying that Family was more important to Andromeda than anything else! Even then, while Family is very important to her, she strives for peace. For Andromeda, peace is the freedom from her stress, anxiety, and even the ill-treatment she has experienced in the recent past before her arrival to Karkura. To her, Peace is a place where she can rest, relax, finally be able to be calm, knowing that she’ll be okay since she has more to look forward to in her new life.

JUSTICE
To Andromeda, Justice isn’t just by law or by a book; it’s something that can be brought by any ordinary person, just as she. Justice is a moral rightness, the quality of being reasonable instead of unfair and ‘rigged’ a certain way. She believes that Justice is Equality, and everybody should be treated the same, even having the same items as others. This core value of Justice subtly bleeds into the Honesty value, though not as much as others.

PATIENCE
Patience is important to Andromeda because she sees anger as a negative habit if done repetitively. While it’s not morally evil nor good, Patience restrains the unjust anger that may harm other people. Even though she’s not a physical person, Andromeda has learned that words may harm further than anything physical can ever do. Agreeing with the popular opinion that anger and frustration can quickly conquer good judgment, Andromeda had taught herself how to be patient, even when it came to high-stress or aggravating situations/scenarios.
